Overview
Scientists at India's premier research organisations (CSIR labs, DRDO, ISRO, BARC, ICAR, ICMR) work on national-priority R&D in space, defence, atomic energy, agriculture, biomedicine, materials, and chemistry. Entry is highly competitive: ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB) for Scientist/Engineer SC, DRDO RAC and SET, CSIR LBS Programme and direct recruitment to specific labs. Pay is at central government 7th CPC scientist scales with significant non-monetary value: cutting-edge research, national-mission impact, and strong academic-industry transitions.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design and conduct experiments per project objectives; develop prototypes and test them; publish results in peer-reviewed journals; file patents on novel inventions; collaborate with academic institutions and industry partners; mentor research scholars and junior scientists; participate in DST / DBT / DRDO grant proposals; present at national and international conferences; support technology transfer to industry.
Skills required
- Domain depth (physics, chemistry, biology, engineering specialisation)
- Research methodology and experimental design
- Scientific writing (papers, patents, project reports)
- Computational tools (MATLAB, Python, COMSOL, ANSYS, etc.)
- Lab instrumentation and analytical techniques
- Project management for research projects
- Collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams
- Grant writing
Education path
M.Sc / M.Tech / M.E. in relevant discipline for entry-level Scientist B / Scientist C roles. PhD strongly preferred and increasingly required for permanent scientist tracks. Selection through ISRO ICRB, DRDO RAC, DRDO SET (for fresh M.Tech), CSIR Lateral Entry, GATE-based recruitment for some positions, plus institute-specific selections at BARC OCES. M.Tech from IITs, NITs, IISc heavily weighted.
Career progression
- 1Scientist B (0-3 yrs)
- 2Scientist C (3-7 yrs)
- 3Scientist D (7-12 yrs)
- 4Scientist E (12-18 yrs)
- 5Scientist F / G / H / Director (18+ yrs)
