All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rishikesh (AIIMS Rishikesh) is a centrally funded Institute of National Importance established in 2012 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. Located at Virbhadra Road, Shivaji Nagar, Rishikesh in Uttarakhand, it operates under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. AIIMS Rishikesh is not subject to NAAC accreditation, as all new AIIMS under PMSSY hold statutory exempt status as Institutes of National Importance.
AIIMS Rishikesh ranked #13 in the NIRF 2025 Medical category (score 65.02) and #78 Overall (score 51.77), making it the highest-ranked among the six original new AIIMS in the Medical category. Its 960-bed teaching hospital manages over 3,000 outpatient visits daily across 94 specialised clinics, 25 modular operation theatres, and departments spanning 18 specialties and 17 super-specialties. The institution operates India's first government heli-ambulance service and a drone healthcare delivery network serving the Uttarakhand hill districts. Research partnerships include IIT Roorkee and Patanjali Yogpeeth, plus ICMR-funded Multi-disciplinary Research Units.
MBBS is the flagship programme with 125 seats per year. AIIMS Rishikesh offers one of the most diverse PG portfolios among the new AIIMS, with approximately 80 MD/MS seats across 25 specialties per INI-CET session, plus DM and M.Ch programmes through both INI-CET (6-year post-MBBS) and INI-SS (3-year post-MD/MS) routes. Notable DM programmes unique to AIIMS Rishikesh include High Altitude Medicine, Addiction Psychiatry, and Paediatric Gastroenterology, reflecting the institution's Himalayan location and research profile. The B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing programme admits 100 students annually.
The 200-acre campus at Virbhadra Road provides on-campus hostel accommodation at no cost (only a refundable security deposit of Rs 500 is collected). Single rooms are available from Year 3 of MBBS; first- and second-year students share double rooms. PG Junior Residents are provided separate on-campus residential quarters. Mess charges of approximately Rs 6,000-7,000 per month are billed separately.

MBBS admissions are conducted through NEET UG followed by MCC centralised counselling. AIIMS Rishikesh MBBS seats (125 per year) fall under the All India Quota pool with no NRI, management, or state quota seats. Reservation follows central government norms: 27% OBC (non-creamy layer), 15% SC, 7.5% ST, and 10% EWS. Candidates register on the MCC portal (mcc.nic.in) after qualifying NEET UG.
MD and MS postgraduate admissions are through INI-CET, conducted by AIIMS New Delhi twice a year (January and July sessions). Candidates must hold an MBBS degree with one year of compulsory rotatory internship. The 6-year integrated M.Ch/DM route (post-MBBS) is also admitted through the INI-CET mechanism. AIIMS Rishikesh's PG seat matrix lists approximately 80 MD/MS seats per session across 25 specialties; see aiimsexams.ac.in for the current distribution.
3-year DM and M.Ch super-specialty admissions (post-MD/MS) are through INI-SS conducted by AIIMS New Delhi. PG Diploma programmes have separate sponsored-category counselling and are not open to private candidates. B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing and M.Sc Nursing admissions are through the common AIIMS Nursing Entrance Test. The B.Sc Nursing programme is open to female candidates only; eligibility is 10+2 with PCB and English, minimum 45% aggregate (40% for SC/ST).
AIIMS Rishikesh offers one of the most subsidised fee structures in Indian medical education. Total tuition and institutional charges for the entire 5.5-year MBBS programme amount to approximately Rs 19,950 (approximately Rs 4,150 per year, inclusive of tuition, examination, gymkhana, and institutional levies). Hostel accommodation is provided at no recurring cost; only a refundable security deposit of approximately Rs 500 is collected for the entire course.
Mess charges of approximately Rs 6,000-7,000 per month are billed separately on a self-sustaining basis. The total annual cost of attendance including mess is approximately Rs 77,000-90,000 per year, still far below comparable private medical college costs.
MBBS interns receive a monthly stipend of Rs 30,070 (revised January 2022 by MoHFW) during the 12-month compulsory rotating internship. PG Junior Residents receive Rs 64,000 per month during their training tenure (3 or 6 years). Senior Residents post-PG receive Rs 74,000 per month. These stipends apply uniformly across all new AIIMS under PMSSY.
AIIMS Rishikesh's near-zero fee structure (Rs 4,150/year total institutional charges; free hostel) removes most financial burden at the point of admission. The following support mechanisms supplement this:
B.Sc Nursing and M.Sc Nursing students can access NSP post-matric scholarships through scholarships.gov.in. Research scholars and PG students may access DST, DBT, ICMR, and CSIR fellowships for doctoral and post-doctoral research.
AIIMS Rishikesh's 200-acre campus is located at Virbhadra Road, Shivaji Nagar, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand 249203, on the western bank of the Ganga River at the foothills of the Himalayas in the sub-Himalayan town of Rishikesh. The campus integrates the medical college, nursing college, 960-bed teaching hospital, research facilities, and residential areas within a single contiguous site.
The teaching hospital manages 3,000-plus outpatients daily across 94 specialised clinics and 18 specialty plus 17 super-specialty departments. Surgical infrastructure includes 25 modular operation theatres. Specialized services include a Trauma Surgery and Critical Care centre (24-hour), Surgical and Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Paediatric Neurology, Urology telemedicine, and an AYUSH Wing integrating traditional medicine. AIIMS Rishikesh launched India's first government heli-ambulance service for mountain emergency transport and a drone medical supply network for remote hill areas in Uttarakhand. Research facilities include ICMR-funded Multi-disciplinary Research Units, a Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, a Drug Discovery and Analysis Centre, and a Centre for Evidence Synthesis and Public Policy.
Student hostels on campus provide on-campus accommodation at no annual cost. From Year 3 of MBBS, students are allotted single rooms; Years 1 and 2 use double-occupancy rooms. PG Junior Residents receive separate residential quarters. All rooms have power backup, geysers, RO water, and Wi-Fi access. Rishikesh is connected by road to Dehradun (45 km) and Haridwar (22 km), and by air via Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (approximately 35 km). The Rishikesh Railway Station is approximately 3 km from campus. The campus overlooks the Ganga River near the Triveni Ghat area and is surrounded by the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayan range.
