Banasthali Vidyapith is a women-only deemed-to-be university in Rajasthan, founded on 6 October 1935 by Pandit Hiralal Shastri and Smt. Ratan Shastri as Shri Shantabai Shiksha Kutir, a small school for about six girls, following the death of the founders' 12-year-old daughter Shantabai. The institution adopted the name Banasthali Vidyapith in 1943, the same year it introduced undergraduate courses, and received deemed-to-be-university status from the UGC on 25 October 1983.

The university describes itself as the only residential women's institution in the country offering education from the pre-primary stage through the doctoral level. B.Ed programmes. The Music aptitude assessment is a practical performance test (a slow and a fast khyal with tabla accompaniment, plus basic theory) rather than a written exam. GAT-B qualified candidates are exempt from the application fee.
Engineering sits under the Faculty of Automation rather than a separate Faculty of Engineering, developed in collaboration with the Bajaj Group, offering B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Instrumentation, and Mechatronics. Architecture is offered as a department within the university rather than as a separate faculty.
Banasthali also holds continuous UGC-DEB entitlement for online-mode programmes since 2021-22: BA, B.Com, MA (Economics, English, History, Political Science, Sociology), MBA, M.Com, M.Sc (Mathematics), and M.Sc (Statistics), for the 2025-26 academic session, offered exclusively to women like the on-campus programmes.
