Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University was established in 1952 as Bihar University, making it Bihar's second-oldest university after Patna University, founded in 1917. Its headquarters moved to Muzaffarpur in 1960 after the Bihar State Universities Act split the original institution into three, and it took its present name in 1992. The university went on to spin off three further Bihar state universities of its own: Magadh University in 1961, Mithila University (now L.N. Mithila University) in 1973, and J.P. University, Chapra in 1990.

The university's own PG departments teach MA programmes across ten subjects including Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit and three regional languages, alongside M.Sc. programmes in seven science subjects, M.Com, MBA and MCA. Its affiliated network additionally offers Ph.D., B.Ed. and M.Ed., BHMS, BAMS, BUMS, B.Pharma and law degrees across its wider college system. A newly launched Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programme began accepting its first batch for 2026-30.
Admission runs through the Government of India's SAMARTH e-governance portal. Postgraduate admission uses the university's own Post Graduate Admission Test, while undergraduate admission follows CBCS-based provisional and selected-student merit lists released in rounds, with on-the-spot rounds run for any seats still vacant afterward.
The university's only completed NAAC cycle, Grade B with a CGPA of 2.27, expired in September 2020, and the university's own NIRF filings confirm it currently holds no valid NAAC accreditation. It has never appeared in a published NIRF rank list, despite filing annual submissions under Institute ID IR-O-U-0058.
The university runs 28 postgraduate teaching departments directly, alongside an affiliated network spanning roughly 300 colleges across six districts, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, East Champaran, West Champaran and Vaishali, covering general degree, B.Ed., law, and Ayurvedic, Unani and Homeopathic medical education. It holds no currently valid NAAC accreditation: its only completed cycle, Grade B with a CGPA of 2.27, expired in September 2020, and the university's own NIRF filings confirm it holds no valid accreditation today. It has never appeared in a published NIRF rank list, despite filing annual submissions under Institute ID IR-O-U-0058.

Founded in 1952 as Bihar's second university after Patna University, and the parent institution of three further Bihar state universities: Magadh (1961), Mithila (1973) and J.P. University, Chapra (1990).
Its flagship constituent college, Langat Singh College, predates the university itself, founded in 1899 and counting India's future first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and freedom-movement leader Acharya J.B. Kripalani among its early-20th-century teaching staff, before Mahatma Gandhi visited the campus in April 1917 on his way to the Champaran Satyagraha.
28 directly-run PG departments plus roughly 300 affiliated colleges spanning general degree, B.Ed., law, and Ayurvedic, Unani and Homeopathic medical education across six districts.
An Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programme began accepting its first batch for 2026-30, combining a degree with structured industry apprenticeship.
Honest caveat: the university's only completed NAAC cycle lapsed in September 2020 and it currently holds no valid accreditation, and it has never appeared in a published NIRF rank list despite filing annually, so a prospective student is choosing this university on the strength of its historical standing and college network, not a current national quality rating.
