Gandhi Medical College (GMC), Bhopal is a government medical college inaugurated on 13 August 1955 by Lal Bahadur Shastri. Its main building stands on the site of the historic Fatehgarh Fort, overlooking the Upper Lake; the building was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in March 1963. The college became an autonomous body under the Gandhi Medical College Society in January 1997. It is affiliated to Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University (MPMSU), Jabalpur, and its teaching hospital, Hamidia Hospital, sits on the same campus.
Hamidia Hospital treated the large majority of patients during the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster; the college's own records describe this as a role in emergency response and care rather than a standalone department. The dedicated long-term gas-relief research institution in the city, Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre, is a separate body under ICMR, not part of GMC.
