Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad, commonly known as MNNIT Allahabad, is a centrally funded technical institute located in Teliyarganj, Prayagraj (the city formerly called Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1961 as Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College, jointly run by the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, and was among the first set of Regional Engineering Colleges upgraded to National Institute of Technology status on 26 June 2002. The institute is recognised as an Institute of National Importance under the NITs Act, 2007.
The campus spans about 222 acres (90 hectares) in Teliyarganj on the northern edge of Prayagraj. MNNIT is a fully residential institute and houses more than 4,500 students across eight boys hostels and five girls hostels with a combined girls-hostel capacity of about 1,279. The campus also has academic blocks, central library, computer centre, sports facilities, health centre, and faculty quarters.
MNNIT offers ten B.Tech programmes including Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, Biotechnology, Engineering and Computational Mechanics, and Materials Engineering. Admission to all B.Tech programmes is through JEE Main, followed by seat allocation by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The institute was the first in India to start an undergraduate Computer Science and Engineering programme in 1976-77. Postgraduate programmes include M.Tech in various engineering specialisations admitted through GATE, MCA, MBA admitted via CAT, M.Sc, and PhD programmes across departments.
As of the latest NIRF disclosure the institute had about 6,266 students on roll, of whom around 4,348 were undergraduates, 1,299 postgraduates, and 619 doctoral students, supported by around 280 academic staff. The current Director is Professor Rama Shanker Verma and the Chairperson of the Board of Governors is Vivek Lall.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, MNNIT Allahabad was ranked 62 in the Engineering category with a score of 52.15, after rank 60 in 2024 and rank 49 in 2023. It also features in the 151-200 band in the NIRF Overall category 2025.
The 2025 placement cycle recorded a B.Tech highest package of ₹72 LPA, an average package of ₹20.43 LPA, and a median package of ₹12.6 LPA, with 83.29 per cent of the eligible B.Tech batch placed and 966 offers made to 844 eligible students. A total of 558 companies visited the campus, including Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Accenture, and Infosys. The Computer Science and Engineering branch recorded the strongest average package of ₹27.72 LPA. M.Tech placements logged an average of ₹11.78 LPA and a highest of ₹52.57 LPA with an 87.56 per cent placement rate.
The B.Tech tuition fee is ₹62,500 per semester for general candidates. With all mandatory academic charges included, the total academic fee works out to approximately ₹1.64 lakh per year, and about ₹6.57 lakh over the full four-year programme. Full tuition waivers apply for SC, ST, and PwD students and for candidates with family income below ₹1 lakh, and partial waivers for family income up to ₹5 lakh. Hostel and mess charges for four years are about ₹2.98 lakh.
Notable alumni include Vinod Dham, popularly called the Father of the Pentium for his work on the Intel Pentium processor; Rajeev Chandrasekhar, entrepreneur and former Union Minister of State; and Sanjeev Chaturvedi, an Indian Forest Service officer and Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient.
MNNIT traces its roots to 1961 as one of the original Regional Engineering Colleges and was among the first batch of RECs upgraded to NIT status in 2002, giving it a longer alumni and recruiter base than newer NITs.
B.Tech batch 2025 saw a highest package of ₹72 LPA, average ₹20.43 LPA, median ₹12.6 LPA, and 83.29 per cent placement, with 558 recruiters including Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, and Accenture.
MNNIT was the first college in the country to start an undergraduate Computer Science and Engineering programme in 1976-77; CSE 2025 batch logged an average package of ₹27.72 LPA.
As a centrally funded Institute of National Importance, total B.Tech academic fee is about ₹1.64 lakh per year (₹62,500/semester tuition plus mandatory charges), totalling ₹6.57 lakh, with full waivers for SC/ST/PwD and family income below ₹1 lakh, and partial waivers up to ₹5 lakh.
Fully residential 222-acre campus in Teliyarganj, Prayagraj, with eight boys hostels and five girls hostels accommodating more than 4,500 students.
Honest caveat: MNNIT Allahabad is a strong but not top-tier NIT. NIRF Engineering rank has slipped from 49 in 2023 to 62 in 2025, and the B.Tech median package of ₹12.6 LPA in 2025 is well below the average because of a few outlier offers. CSE remains very competitive, with closing ranks under 5,000 in JoSAA 2024 general all-India quota, while non-circuit branches like Civil, Biotechnology, and Production engineer have noticeably weaker placement outcomes than CSE or ECE.
