St. John's Medical College was established in 1963 by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI). The college opened in temporary premises in July 1963 and moved to its permanent campus in June 1968, dedicated by President Zakir Hussain. It is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore, and recognised by the National Medical Commission.
The college operates as a Christian (Catholic) minority institution, which shapes a distinctive admission structure: a share of MBBS seats are reserved across minority categories (Catholic and Christian community categories, religious sisters, sponsored diocesan candidates) alongside general merit seats, allotted through the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). Thirty MBBS seats are separately reserved for students from health-underserved regions of north and northeast India. St. John's is one of five institutes under St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences, alongside its hospital, research institute, and college of nursing.
