Overview
Marine engineers design, build, and maintain ships, offshore platforms, and marine propulsion systems. Distinct from Merchant Navy officers (who operate ships at sea), shore-based marine engineers work at shipyards (Cochin Shipyard, Mazagon Dock, Hindustan Shipyard, Goa Shipyard, L&T Shipbuilding), offshore engineering firms (Aban Offshore, ONGC, GAIL Marine), classification societies (Indian Register of Shipping, DNV, Lloyd's Register India), and naval design organisations (DGND, DRDO Naval Materials Research Lab). India's shipbuilding capacity is expanding with the Maritime India Vision 2030 driving 5-10x growth in port and shipyard infrastructure.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design ship hull structures, propulsion systems, and marine machinery using CAD (AutoCAD, AVEVA Marine, ShipConstructor); conduct structural and hydrodynamic analysis using FEA tools; oversee ship construction at shipyards (block fabrication, hull assembly, outfitting); inspect and certify marine equipment per classification society rules; conduct sea trials for new builds; design repair and refit programmes for existing vessels; coordinate with naval architects, electrical engineers, and project managers; ensure compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, and class society rules.
Skills required
- Marine engineering principles (propulsion, hydrodynamics, structural)
- Ship design CAD (AutoCAD, AVEVA Marine, Rhino + Maxsurf)
- FEA analysis (ANSYS, Abaqus)
- Classification society rules (IRS, DNV, Lloyd's Register, ABS)
- IMO regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW)
- Project management for shipbuilding
- Marine welding and fabrication knowledge
- Marine machinery (diesel engines, boilers, refrigeration, electrical systems)
Education path
B.Tech / B.E. Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture (4 years) from IIT Madras (Ocean Engineering), AMET Chennai, IMU Chennai/Vishakhapatnam/Kolkata/Mumbai, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Andhra University.
