Overview
Naval architects design ships, submarines, offshore platforms, and floating structures — handling hull form, stability, strength, hydrodynamics, and integrated ship systems. Distinct from marine engineers (who focus on propulsion and machinery), naval architects own the overall vessel design. India's growing shipbuilding capacity (Cochin Shipyard, Mazagon Dock, L&T Shipbuilding, Hindustan Shipyard) and the Maritime India Vision 2030 drive consistent demand. The Indian Navy's submarine modernisation (Project 75I) and the Indian Coast Guard fleet expansion create defence-side opportunities at MDL and other Indian shipyards.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design ship hull forms using CAD (AVEVA Marine, Rhino + Maxsurf, NAPA); conduct stability and hydrodynamic analysis; perform structural analysis using FEA tools (ANSYS, Abaqus); coordinate ship arrangement and outfitting plans; review designs against IMO conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, ILLC) and class society rules; conduct sea trials and stability tests; design specialised vessels (LNG carriers, FPSOs, container ships, naval combatants); manage ship-life extension and conversion projects.
