Overview
Structural Engineers design and analyse the load-bearing structures of buildings, bridges, dams, towers, industrial structures, and offshore platforms. Distinct from civil engineers (broader scope including transportation, water resources, environmental), structural engineers focus specifically on the structural integrity — making sure things don't fall down. India's $1.4 trillion infrastructure spend through 2030, the metro rail expansion across 30+ cities, high-rise building boom in metros, plus the Smart Cities Mission drive sustained demand. Major employers: L&T Construction (the dominant Indian construction major), Shapoorji Pallonji, Tata Projects, AECOM India, Jacobs India, plus consulting firms.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design RCC and steel structures using analysis software (STAAD.Pro, ETABS, SAP2000); conduct seismic and wind analysis per IS 1893 and IS 875; prepare design calculations and structural drawings; coordinate with architects and other engineering disciplines (MEP); review and approve drawings from junior engineers; conduct site visits for inspection during construction; ensure compliance with NBC (National Building Code), IS codes, IRC (Indian Roads Congress) standards for bridges; manage structural-design budgets and timelines; participate in structural-failure investigations.
Skills required
- Structural analysis software (STAAD.Pro, ETABS, SAP2000, RAM Structural System)
- RCC and steel design per IS codes (IS 456, IS 800, IS 13920)
- Foundation design (shallow, pile, raft)
- Seismic design and earthquake engineering (IS 1893, Indian seismic zones)
- Wind load analysis (IS 875 Part 3)
- Knowledge of NBC, IRC, IS codes
- AutoCAD and Revit Structure
- Site supervision and quality control
