Overview
ECE engineers work on the hardware and signal-processing layers behind every connected device: smartphones, network equipment, radar and avionics, satellite payloads, IoT sensors, and 5G base stations. India's semiconductor mission (₹76,000 crore PLI scheme), the rollout of 5G, and the growing electronics manufacturing ecosystem (Foxconn, Tata Electronics, Micron Sanand) have driven sharp demand growth since 2023. ECE graduates also dominate hiring at Qualcomm, Intel, NVIDIA, Texas Instruments, and ISRO.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design analog and digital circuits using Cadence or Mentor Graphics; develop firmware in C and Embedded C for microcontrollers; lay out PCBs in Altium or KiCad; characterise RF and microwave components on lab benches; verify designs in Verilog or VHDL; debug signal integrity and EMI issues; collaborate with mechanical and software teams on integrated products; review datasheets and component selection.

Education path
B.Tech / B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Electronics Engineering, or Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. M.Tech in VLSI Design, Embedded Systems, or Communication Engineering for specialist roles. Diploma in Electronics Engineering for technician and junior engineer roles. GATE qualification opens PSU and ISRO recruitment.
