What a Software Engineer Actually Does
A software engineer (also called Software Development Engineer or SDE in Amazon / Microsoft taxonomy, Software Engineer in Google / Meta taxonomy, Member of Technical Staff or MTS in Salesforce / Oracle / VMware taxonomy) is a technical professional who designs, writes, tests, and maintains software systems. The job is not regulated like medicine or chartered accountancy; there is no licensing body. Employability is decided by competence demonstrated in technical interviews and on-the-job code output.
Core functions across a 15 to 25-year career:
- Feature design and implementation: Write code in production languages (Java, Python, Go, JavaScript / TypeScript, C++, Kotlin, Swift, Rust) to deliver user-facing or platform features.
- Code review and pull request management: Review peer code, give actionable feedback, enforce style guides, security checks, and test coverage.
- System design and architecture: Design data models, API contracts, service boundaries, caching, queueing, scaling. Staff-and-above engineers spend 30 to 60 percent of time here.
- Incident response and on-call: Production debugging, root-cause analysis, post-mortems. Most product companies and SRE teams run 1-week on-call rotations.
- Customer empathy and product collaboration: Work with product managers, designers, data scientists to translate user problems into shipped features.
- Cross-team and platform work: Build shared libraries, infrastructure, developer-experience tooling. Platform engineers, SREs, DevOps and security engineers concentrate here.
- Engineering management track (separate ladder, optional): Move from individual contributor (SDE-3 or Staff) to Engineering Manager, Senior Manager, Director, VP Engineering. Different skill set: hiring, performance management, roadmap planning, budgeting.
A Day in the Life
A software engineer's day depends sharply on the company type (FAANG, Indian product unicorn, service IT, startup), the specialisation (frontend, backend, ML, DevOps, SRE), and the stage (SDE-1, SDE-2, Senior, Staff). Four common rosters look completely different.

Education Pathway, Step by Step
The standard path is 4 years from Class 12 to a B.Tech CSE plus a campus or off-campus job offer. Several alternates work depending on background.
Step 1: Class 11 to 12: Pick PCM and Build JEE Foundation
NMC-equivalent regulatory body for engineering admissions is the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), plus state engineering counselling bodies. Most B.Tech CSE seats require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) at 75 percent (for IITs) or 60 to 65 percent (NITs and IIITs). State engineering colleges typically require 50 percent.
- Stream choice: Science with Mathematics (PCM) is mandatory for B.Tech. PCMB also works (keeps medical optional). Commerce or Arts students typically pivot to BCA or B.Sc CS instead.
- JEE preparation: Most B.Tech CSE entrants take 1 to 2 years of dedicated JEE coaching (Allen Kota, FIITJEE, Resonance, Aakash, PW Vidyapeeth Physics Wallah, Unacademy, Vedantu). About 14 lakh appear for JEE Main annually.
- Coaching cost: ₹1.5 to ₹3.5 lakh per year for classroom coaching at Kota / Hyderabad / Bengaluru centres. ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 for online coaching. Self-study with NCERT plus reference books is feasible but uncommon for IIT-targeting candidates.
- Foundational reading: NCERT Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, Maths (compulsory baseline). HC Verma Concepts of Physics, Cengage Maths (B.M. Sharma), MS Chouhan Organic Chemistry, JD Lee Inorganic Chemistry.
Step 2: JEE Main and JEE Advanced: The Entry Exams
JEE Main (NTA-conducted, January and April sessions) is the entrance for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and many state and private engineering colleges. JEE Advanced (IIT-conducted, May or June, top 2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers eligible) is the entrance for the 23 IITs.
- JEE Main eligibility: Class 12 passed (or appearing) with PCM and 75 percent aggregate (65 percent for SC, ST, PwD). No age limit. 2 attempts per year, 3 years of attempts allowed.
- JEE Main exam pattern: 90 questions (75 to attempt), 3 hours. Maths, Physics, Chemistry equally weighted. Computer-Based Test.
- JEE Main rank to college outcomes (2025 indicative for CSE): Rank 1 to 500 = top NITs (Trichy CSE, Surathkal CSE, Warangal CSE); Rank 500 to 5,000 = mid-tier NITs CSE plus top IIITs CSE; Rank 5,000 to 25,000 = lower-tier NITs and IIITs, top state colleges; Rank 25,000 to 100,000 = state colleges; Rank 100,000+ = lower-tier private engineering colleges.
- JEE Advanced eligibility: Top 2.5 lakh JEE Main rankers. About 1.8 lakh appear.
- JEE Advanced rank to IIT outcomes (2025 indicative for CSE): Rank 1 to 100 = IIT Bombay CSE / IIT Delhi CSE; Rank 100 to 500 = IIT Madras CSE / IIT Kanpur CSE / IIT Kharagpur CSE / IIT Roorkee CSE; Rank 500 to 2,500 = IIT Guwahati CSE plus older IIT CSE branches; Rank 2,500 to 10,000 = new IITs CSE.

Step 5: Off-Campus Hiring (Lateral Entry to Better Companies)
After 2 to 4 years at a first job, lateral entry to better companies is common.
- DSA-and-system-design preparation: LeetCode (300 to 600 problems across easy, medium, hard tiers), Educative System Design Primer, Designing Data-Intensive Applications by Martin Kleppmann.
- Referral-driven hiring: Most off-campus FAANG and unicorn hires happen via employee referrals. Maintain network from college.
- Open-source contribution: Strong GitHub portfolio (visible commits, popular libraries, well-maintained projects) is a separate signalling lever.
- Side projects: Building shipped products that attract real users is the strongest CV signal for product company hiring.
Step 6: Specialisation Lock-In and Senior IC Career
By year 3 to 5 of work, most software engineers lock into a specialisation (frontend, backend, fullstack, mobile, data, ML, DevOps, security). Senior career growth (SDE-2 → SDE-3 → Staff) is specialisation-specific.
- Continuous learning: Read 1 to 2 technical books per year, follow industry blogs (Hacker News, LWN, High Scalability, Martin Fowler, Joel Spolsky), attend conferences (KubeCon, AWS re:Invent, Google I/O, Microsoft Ignite, India tech events Devopsdays, RootConf, IndiaHacks).
- Open-source contribution and conference talks: Build technical brand. Strongest lever for off-campus senior hiring.
- Master's or PhD (optional): M.S. CS at Stanford, MIT, CMU, UIUC, Georgia Tech, UC Berkeley is a recognised lever to FAANG US offices and Research Scientist roles. M.Tech at IITs / IISc Bangalore is the Indian equivalent. PhD is required for Research Scientist tracks at Google Research, Microsoft Research India, IBM Research, Adobe Research.
Courses that lead to this career
Alternate Routes to Becoming a Software Engineer
The JEE plus B.Tech CSE route is dominant but not the only path:
- BCA plus MCA: 3-year BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) after Class 12 from any stream (Maths in Class 12 helpful), followed by 2-year MCA (Master of Computer Applications). Total 5 years. About 30 to 40 percent of Indian software engineers come via this route. Service IT companies hire BCA-MCA freshers; top product companies prefer B.Tech but accept strong MCA candidates.
- B.Sc Computer Science plus M.Sc CS: 3-year B.Sc CS plus 2-year M.Sc CS. Similar outcome to BCA-MCA. Strong CS graduates from Delhi University, Madras Christian College, Loyola Chennai, St Xavier's Mumbai, St Stephen's, Hindu College can clear JEE Advanced equivalents to gain IIT M.Tech admission.
- B.Tech in adjacent branches (ECE, EE, Mechanical, etc.) plus CS specialisation: Many B.Tech ECE / EE graduates transition to software engineering via specialised internships, online certifications, and DSA-and-system-design preparation. Top Indian product companies hire B.Tech across branches; service IT often segregates by branch.
- Coding bootcamps (6 to 12 months): Masai School (income-share agreement), AltCampus, Newton School, Scaler Academy, GeeksforGeeks Coursera, Coding Ninjas, Crio.Do, AlmaBetter. Cost ₹2 to ₹5 lakh, deferred via income-share or upfront. Outcomes vary widely; top performers placed at ₹6 to ₹15 lakh; median ₹4 to ₹8 lakh. Best fit for non-CS graduates and career switchers from BPO or sales.
- Self-taught from no degree: Possible but harder route to top companies. Strong open-source projects, well-maintained personal site, LeetCode profile, freelance client work can substitute for degree in early career. Senior hiring usually does not check degrees (Google removed degree requirement for SWE in 2017; many Indian product unicorns follow suit).
- Lateral entry from QA or Support: Manual QA testers and customer support engineers with strong technical aptitude can transition to SDET, then SDE. Long but well-documented path inside service IT and product companies.
State and central scholarships: NTSE (National Talent Search Examination, Class 10 toppers), KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, science stream toppers), INSPIRE (DST, B.Sc science students), AICTE Pragati and Saksham (women and PwD candidates), Central Sector Scholarship.

Job Market and Future Outlook
- Annual software engineering hires: India hires about 350,000 to 450,000 fresh software engineers per year (combined service IT, GCC, product, startup). About 1 million Indian engineers join the software workforce each year if including BCA, MCA, lateral entry, bootcamp graduates.
- Service IT headcount: TCS (614,000+ employees globally), Infosys (320,000+), Wipro (240,000+), Cognizant (340,000+), Accenture India (300,000+), HCLTech (220,000+), Tech Mahindra (140,000+). Combined Indian IT services workforce about 5 million.
- Product and unicorn headcount: Flipkart (~22,000), Swiggy (~5,500), Razorpay (~3,500), CRED (~3,000), Paytm (~26,000), PhonePe (~5,500). About 100,000 to 150,000 engineers across Indian product companies.
- GCC growth: 1,580+ GCCs in India in 2024-25; about 1.9 million employees. Growing 15 to 20 percent annually. Walmart, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Target, Lowe's are top employers.
- AI / ML hiring boom (2023-2026): Generative AI and LLM applications have created a parallel hiring track. Senior ML engineers and Applied Scientists at top companies command 40 to 80 percent premium over generalist SWE.
- Pay trajectory: FAANG India senior IC compensation grew 60 to 100 percent between 2020 and 2024 driven by post-pandemic talent crunch. Service IT entry-level pay grew 5 to 10 percent annually over the same period. Indian product unicorns hit peak hiring in 2021-22 with mass freezes / lay-offs in 2022-24; hiring resumed selectively in 2025-26.
- Pressures: Lay-offs at FAANG (Meta, Google, Microsoft, Amazon US-India shared cuts 2022-24), service IT bench-management concerns, AI-driven coding automation pressure on entry-level roles, increasing onsite-offshore mix shift to India for cost arbitrage but with quality-of-output scrutiny.
- Long-term trends: Domain specialisation (fintech, healthtech, climatetech) commanding premium, full-stack ability rewarded at small-medium teams, AI-assisted development (Copilot, Cursor) raising the productivity floor.

Pros and Cons of a Software Engineer Career
What is good about being a software engineer in India
- Highest pay ceiling among Indian undergraduate-entry careers: FAANG India Staff Engineers at ₹2 to ₹5 crore, Distinguished Engineers at ₹5 to ₹7 crore, Director / VP Engineering at ₹5 to ₹10 crore. Few Indian careers reach these compensation levels at the IC track without entrepreneurship.
- Global mobility: US H-1B / L1, Canada Express Entry, UK Skilled Worker, Singapore, Germany, Netherlands, Ireland are all open to Indian software engineers with 2 to 4 years' experience. Pay 1.5 to 3x equivalent Indian roles after currency conversion.
- No regulatory licence: No exam, no bond, no continuing education requirements. Career portability is decided by demonstrated skill, not certification.
- Remote-first work: Significant subset of product company roles are remote-friendly. Bengaluru rents and traffic become optional after senior IC level.
- Career optionality: Switch from frontend to backend to mobile to data to ML, switch from IC to engineering management and back, switch from product to platform to research. The skill stack composes across most pivots.
- Startup founder pipeline: About 30 to 50 percent of Indian software-driven startups have founders with 3 to 10 years of software engineering experience. The career is a viable accelerator for entrepreneurship.
- Continuous intellectual engagement: Languages, frameworks, paradigms keep changing; the engineering job in 2026 is materially different from 2010. Boredom is rarely the dominant career complaint.
What is hard about being a software engineer in India
- Entry-level service IT compensation: ₹3.5 to ₹4.5 lakh per year fresher pay at TCS / Infosys / Wipro is among the lowest entry compensation in Indian engineering. The 8 to 10 years' wait for senior roles can be financially painful.
- Interview process intensity: Top product company hiring requires 200 to 500 LeetCode problems plus system design preparation. 2 to 5 hours of weekend prep over 6 to 12 months is the median time investment for off-campus FAANG and unicorn hires.
- Constant skill churn: A 35-year career requires 5 to 6 major skill-stack transitions (mainframe → client-server → web → mobile → cloud-native → AI-augmented). Engineers who stop learning age out within 5 to 7 years.
- Lay-off risk: Service IT bench-warm rates, FAANG cyclical cuts, startup funding freezes. Job security is below government / public sector / regulated professions.
- Bengaluru cost of living: Software-engineering concentration has pushed Bengaluru rents and traffic to levels uncomfortable for junior engineers. ₹35,000 to ₹60,000 per month 1-BHK in tech-corridor areas.
- Long work hours at top companies: FAANG and unicorn product roles often 50 to 60 hours per week including reviews, on-call, design work. Service IT is more predictable at 45 hours but quality of work is the trade-off.
- Manager track vs IC track ceiling perception: Some companies cap senior IC ceiling below VP-track manager ceiling. The reverse is rare. Senior IC career requires deliberate planning.
- Visa dependence for global roles: US H-1B, L1, O1 are quota-restricted. Career path can stall at 3 to 5 years if visa is denied.

- Senior Staff Engineer / Principal SDE (10+ years): ₹35 to ₹80 lakh service IT; ₹1 to ₹3 crore product; ₹2 to ₹7 crore FAANG.
- Director / VP Engineering (16+ years): ₹3 to ₹10 crore plus ESOPs and RSUs.
How long does it take to become a software engineer?
- B.Tech CSE plus first job: 4 years from Class 12.
- BCA plus MCA plus first job: 5 to 6 years.
- Bootcamp graduate (after Class 12 or any degree): 6 to 18 months (varies sharply by performer level and bootcamp track).
- Service IT to product company switch (off-campus FAANG / unicorn): 2 to 5 years of work plus 6 to 18 months of DSA-and-system-design preparation.
Is the software engineer hiring market hard in India?
Honest reality:
- Top product company hiring (FAANG, Indian unicorn): Highly competitive. Single-digit acceptance rates from JEE rank to FAANG India SWE-1 offer. 200 to 500 LeetCode problems plus system design preparation is the median time investment.
- Mid-tier product company hiring: Moderately competitive. Reasonable preparation (50 to 150 LeetCode problems, project portfolio, referral) suffices.
- Service IT entry (TCS Ninja, Infosys System Engineer): High volume hiring. About 100,000 to 200,000 freshers per year combined. Acceptance rate at TCS Ninja off-campus tests around 20 to 25 percent of applicants.
- GCC (Walmart Labs, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs): Moderately competitive. Strong B.Tech CSE candidates from top NITs and IIITs are the typical pool.
What is the difference between SDE-1, SDE-2, SDE-3, Staff Engineer?
5 sequential levels in the Indian software engineering career ladder:
- SDE-1 / Software Engineer I / Software Engineer: Entry level, 0 to 3 years. Implements assigned tasks within a team. ₹15 lakh to ₹50 lakh CTC typical product.
- SDE-2 / Software Engineer II / Senior Software Engineer: 3 to 6 years. Owns features end-to-end, mentors juniors. ₹30 lakh to ₹1 crore CTC product.
- SDE-3 / Senior SDE / Lead Software Engineer: 6 to 10 years. Leads design across services, mentors SDE-1s and SDE-2s. ₹60 lakh to ₹2 crore CTC product.
- Staff Engineer / Principal SDE: 10 to 16 years. Influences engineering decisions across teams. ₹1 to ₹4 crore CTC product, ₹2 to ₹5 crore FAANG.
- Senior Staff / Distinguished / Senior Principal / Director: 16+ years. Sets engineering strategy across multiple departments. ₹2.5 to ₹10 crore CTC.
Should I do B.Tech CSE or BCA?
Honest comparison:
- B.Tech CSE: 4 years, JEE Main / Advanced required, ₹6 to ₹26 lakh total cost, on-campus placement covers most jobs, top product company access easier. Strongest fit for students who score top 5 percent in PCM.
- BCA plus MCA: 5 to 6 years, no JEE required (some MCA require CUET-PG or similar), ₹3 to ₹8 lakh total cost, off-campus hiring is the main route. Strongest fit for students who didn't crack JEE but want software engineering.
Both routes can lead to FAANG India offers. The B.Tech path has stronger campus pipeline; the BCA-MCA path requires more self-driven off-campus preparation.
Can I become a software engineer without a degree?
Yes, possible but harder. Strong open-source projects, well-maintained portfolio (GitHub plus personal site), LeetCode profile, freelance client work can substitute for a degree in early career. Google removed the degree requirement for SWE in 2017; Indian product unicorns (Razorpay, CRED, Zerodha) commonly hire without checking degree. Most service IT companies still require a degree.
The realistic path without a degree: 12 to 24 months of intensive self-study or bootcamp (Scaler, Masai, Newton, Coding Ninjas) plus strong public portfolio plus 3 to 5 referrals from working engineers, leading to a ₹6 to ₹15 lakh first job. Senior career progression is decoupled from degree status after 3 to 5 years.
What is GATE and is it required for software engineering?
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is the entrance for M.Tech admissions at IITs and IISc, plus PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) recruitment (BHEL, BPCL, ONGC, IOCL, Power Grid, etc.). Conducted annually by IITs and IISc.
GATE is not required for software engineering jobs in product, service IT, GCC, or startup. GATE matters if:
- You want M.Tech at IIT or IISc Bangalore (1.5 to 2-year integrated CSE M.Tech leads to top product company hiring).
- You want PSU recruitment (BHEL, BPCL, ONGC software engineering roles).
- You want public-sector research positions (DRDO, ISRO, BARC).
What is the role of GitHub portfolio and LeetCode profile?
- GitHub portfolio: Strongest signal for off-campus product company hiring. Visible commits, popular libraries, well-maintained projects with documentation and tests beat resumes for senior hiring. A green commit history of 6 to 18 months plus 2 to 4 projects with 100+ stars is the median strong portfolio for FAANG off-campus hires.
- LeetCode profile: Important for product company interview preparation. About 300 to 600 problems solved across easy, medium, hard tiers is the median for FAANG off-campus hires. Service IT hiring rarely checks LeetCode.
Should I do M.S. in the US after B.Tech?
Honest trade-offs:
- Pros: Direct access to FAANG US offices (₹1.5 to ₹3 crore entry CTC after currency conversion), green-card pipeline via L1 / H-1B, research scientist career via PhD adjacency. Top US schools (Stanford, MIT, CMU, UIUC, UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech) carry strong brand value.
- Cons: ₹40 lakh to ₹1.5 crore total cost (tuition plus living plus visa) for a 2-year M.S. Visa risk if H-1B not granted post-graduation (about 30 percent chance based on lottery 2025-26).
- Realistic alternative: Strong B.Tech CSE from IIT or NIT plus off-campus FAANG India offer plus L1 internal transfer to FAANG US after 2 to 4 years. Cheaper, lower visa risk.
The M.S. is worth it if your B.Tech is from a non-IIT non-NIT college (admission to top US M.S. resets the brand reset), or if you want a PhD-research-scientist career.
What is the difference between product and service company?
- Product company (Flipkart, Razorpay, Adobe, Microsoft, Google): Owns its own software products sold or used directly by end users. Engineering is the core function, not a cost centre.
- Service company (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture): Sells consulting and engineering services to other companies (typically Western financial services, retail, telecom, manufacturing). Engineering is the delivery function for client projects.
Product company pay is structurally 2 to 5x service IT for the same experience level. Service IT has higher entry-level hiring volume, lower selection bar, and more predictable career structure. Off-campus lateral movement from service IT to product company is common after 2 to 5 years of work.
