Overview
Engineering Managers lead software engineering teams — typically 5-15 engineers — owning team execution, technical decision-making, hiring, performance management, and career development. The role is the dominant 'people manager' track in software (parallel to the Staff/Principal individual contributor track). Top Indian product companies (Razorpay, Swiggy, Flipkart, PhonePe, CRED, Atlassian India) plus GCCs (Microsoft IDC, Google India, Amazon, JP Morgan India, Walmart Global Tech) hire engineering managers at premium pay scales. Senior EMs and Directors of Engineering at top GCCs earn ₹70 lakh - 1.5 crore CTC.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Lead a team of 5-15 engineers; conduct regular 1-on-1s with each team member; manage sprint planning, retrospectives, and execution; participate in technical-design discussions (with appropriate balance against IC track); manage hiring (resume screen, interviews, hiring decisions); conduct performance reviews and calibrations; manage promotions and compensation cycles; coordinate with Product Managers on roadmap; manage relationships with stakeholders (product, design, business teams); handle conflict resolution within and across teams; develop engineers' careers.
Skills required
- People management and 1-on-1 facilitation
- Performance management and feedback
- Hiring and interviewing technical talent
- Sprint planning and project execution
- Technical depth (sufficient to engage in design without micromanaging)
- Stakeholder management
- Career coaching and mentorship
- Conflict resolution and team dynamics
Education path
B.Tech CSE / IT or M.Sc CS as baseline. Most EMs become managers after 6-10 years as software engineers, transitioning between Staff Engineer / Tech Lead and EM roles. Some EMs pursue MBA but it's not standard in tech — strong individual contributor track record matters more. Internal manager-training programmes at Google, Microsoft, Amazon are widely valued. Books / coaching like 'The Manager's Path' by Camille Fournier, 'High Output Management' by Andy Grove are standard reference.
Career progression
- 1Engineering Manager (after 6-10 yrs IC track)
- 2Senior Engineering Manager (4-8 yrs as EM)
- 3Director of Engineering (4-8 yrs as Sr. EM)
- 4Senior Director / VP Engineering (4-8 yrs as Director)
- 5CTO / Engineering SVP (8+ yrs as VP)
