Overview
Cloud architects design and oversee the cloud infrastructure that runs modern applications. They choose between AWS, Azure, and GCP for specific workloads, design for cost and performance, ensure security and compliance, and migrate legacy systems to cloud. Indian Big 4 consulting firms, system integrators (Infosys, TCS, Wipro), and large enterprise IT teams hire heavily for cloud architects.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design cloud reference architectures for new applications; conduct cloud migration assessments and run-books; review and approve infrastructure-as-code modules; optimise cloud spend across multi-account or multi-cloud environments; design for high availability, disaster recovery, and compliance (SOC 2, ISO 27001, RBI guidelines for fintech); mentor DevOps and infrastructure engineers; advise product teams on cloud-native design patterns.
Skills required
- Deep AWS / Azure / GCP knowledge (one in depth, others at fluent level)
- Cloud security (IAM, KMS, network ACLs)
- Infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM)
- Architectural design (microservices, event-driven, serverless)
- Cost optimisation (Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, FinOps)
- Networking and load balancing
- Compliance frameworks
- Communication with non-technical stakeholders
Education path
B.Tech CSE / IT typically, often with MTech or MS specialisation. Most cloud architects have 5 to 10 years of prior software engineering or DevOps experience. Cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert) are de facto credentials.
