Overview
Automobile engineers design, develop, and manufacture passenger cars, commercial vehicles, two-wheelers, EVs, and components. India is the world's third-largest automobile market and a major export hub. The EV transition (Tata Motors EV, Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Ather Energy, TVS, Bajaj), the PLI scheme for autos, and the growing automotive design and engineering services exports (KPIT, L&T Technology Services, Tata Elxsi) have driven sustained High demand. Bengaluru, Pune, and Chennai are the major automotive R&D hubs.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design vehicle systems (powertrain, chassis, body, electricals, infotainment); develop CAD models in CATIA, NX, or Creo; conduct CAE simulations (crash, NVH, fluid dynamics); test prototypes on dynamometers and proving grounds; collaborate with manufacturing engineers on production feasibility; ensure compliance with AIS, ARAI, FMVSS, ECE regulations; lead BoM cost reduction initiatives; manage supplier development for components.
Skills required
- Automotive design (CATIA, NX, Creo)
- CAE simulation (HyperWorks, ANSYS, ABAQUS)
- Powertrain knowledge (IC engine, hybrid, EV)
- Vehicle dynamics and NVH
- AIS / ARAI homologation requirements
- Manufacturing processes (sheet metal, casting, machining, assembly)
- AUTOSAR for software-defined vehicles
- Quality systems (IATF 16949)
Education path
B.Tech / B.E. in Automobile Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. M.Tech in Automotive Engineering (IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, MIT Chennai, VIT Vellore, BITS Pilani). For design and CAE careers, hands-on exposure during internships heavily weighted. GATE Mechanical or Aerospace opens M.Tech and PSU recruitment paths.
