Overview
Biotechnology and biomedical engineers work at the intersection of biology and engineering: developing vaccines, biosimilars, diagnostic devices, medical implants, lab automation, and AI-powered diagnostic platforms. India is the world's largest vaccine producer by volume (Serum Institute, Bharat Biotech) and a major biosimilars hub (Biocon, Dr. Reddy's). The MedTech sector is growing 15% annually with rising hiring at Philips Healthcare, GE Healthcare, Siemens Healthineers, Forus Health, and Biocon Biologics.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design and validate bioprocesses for fermentation, purification, and formulation; develop assays for diagnostics and quality control; run cell culture and protein expression experiments; design medical devices to ISO 13485 and 14971 standards; conduct regulatory documentation for CDSCO, USFDA, EMA submissions; collaborate with clinicians on device validation; supervise GMP manufacturing operations; analyse genomics and bioinformatics data.
