Overview
Electrical engineers design and maintain the systems that generate, transmit, and use electrical energy. The role spans power utilities (NTPC, Power Grid, state DISCOMs), heavy industry (Tata Steel, JSW, BHEL), railways and metro projects, EV manufacturing (Tata Motors, Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric), renewable energy (Adani Green, ReNew), and consumer electronics. With India targeting 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030 and a national EV transition underway, electrical engineering employment is structurally growing across the next decade.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design power circuits and control systems; size transformers, switchgear, and cabling for industrial and utility projects; carry out load-flow and short-circuit studies in tools like ETAP and DigSilent; supervise commissioning and SCADA integration on site; review electrical drawings and BOMs; conduct safety audits and IEC compliance checks; coordinate with civil and mechanical teams on plant layouts; manage vendor packages and inspection.
Skills required
- Power systems analysis
- Electrical machines and drives
- Control systems
- PLC and SCADA programming
- AutoCAD Electrical and ETAP
- Substation and switchgear design

Education path
B.Tech / B.E. in Electrical Engineering or Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) is the standard entry. Diploma in Electrical Engineering opens junior engineer paths in PSUs and state utilities. M.Tech in Power Systems or Power Electronics for advanced design and R&D roles. GATE qualification opens PSU recruitment (NTPC, Power Grid, BHEL, IOCL, NHPC).
