Overview
Chemical engineers design and operate the processes that convert raw materials into fuels, chemicals, polymers, pharmaceuticals, food products, and specialty materials. The Indian chemical industry is among the world's top six and growing at 9% CAGR, driven by speciality chemicals exports, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and the green-hydrogen transition. Major employers include Reliance Industries, Indian Oil, BPCL, ONGC, UPL, Tata Chemicals, plus the entire Indian pharma ecosystem (Sun Pharma, Cipla, Dr. Reddy's, Aurobindo).
Day-to-day responsibilities
Develop process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs); size reactors, distillation columns, heat exchangers, and pumps; run process simulations in Aspen Plus or HYSYS; carry out HAZOP and risk assessments; commission new plants and troubleshoot operations; optimise yield, energy, and water consumption; supervise production and quality teams; ensure compliance with PESO, CPCB, and OSHA standards.
Skills required
- Process design and simulation (Aspen Plus, HYSYS)
- Heat and mass transfer
- Reaction engineering and catalysis
- Process safety (HAZOP, LOPA)
- P&ID and PFD development
- Process control and instrumentation
- Six Sigma and lean manufacturing
- Environmental and pollution control standards
Education path
B.Tech / B.E. in Chemical Engineering is the standard entry. M.Tech in Chemical Engineering or specialisations (Process Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Polymer Science) for advanced roles. PhD pipeline from IITs and IISc into R&D and academia. GATE qualification opens PSU recruitment (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL, ONGC, NTPC, BHEL).
