Overview
Environmental engineers design and operate systems for water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid and hazardous waste management, environmental impact assessment, and climate adaptation. India's tightening environmental regulations (CPCB, MoEFCC, plastic waste rules, EV transition, carbon credit market launch), the Jal Jeevan Mission (universal piped water by 2024), and the corporate ESG mandate have driven sharp High demand growth. Major employers include CPCB, state pollution control boards, water utilities, ESG consultancies, and engineering firms.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design water and wastewater treatment plants (STP, ETP); develop EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) reports; monitor air quality and design pollution-control systems; manage solid waste and hazardous waste programmes; conduct environmental audits; advise corporates on ESG reporting (BRSR, GRI); lead green building (IGBC, LEED, GRIHA) certifications; participate in carbon credit and climate adaptation projects.
