Overview
Embedded systems engineers build the firmware and low-level software that runs inside cars, medical devices, industrial controllers, satellites, drones, and consumer electronics. Demand is rising sharply with the EV transition (Tata, Mahindra, Ola Electric), India's semiconductor manufacturing push, and the growth of automotive OEM design centres in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Pune. The skill set sits at the intersection of ECE and CSE and commands strong premiums.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Write firmware in C and C++ for ARM Cortex-M and RISC-V microcontrollers; design device drivers for sensors and actuators; implement RTOS-based applications (FreeRTOS, Zephyr); debug with JTAG and oscilloscopes; develop bootloaders and over-the-air update systems; comply with AUTOSAR and MISRA-C standards in automotive contexts; integrate communication stacks (CAN, LIN, BLE, Wi-Fi); collaborate with hardware engineers on board bring-up.
Skills required
- Embedded C and C++
- ARM Cortex-M and RISC-V architectures
- RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX)
- AUTOSAR (automotive) and MISRA-C
- Communication protocols (CAN, LIN, SPI, I2C, UART, BLE)
- JTAG and SWD debugging
- Bootloader and OTA systems
- Linux device drivers and kernel modules
Education path
B.Tech / B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Embedded Systems specialisation. M.Tech in Embedded Systems or VLSI for advanced roles. Strong project portfolio (working microcontroller-based projects on GitHub) is heavily weighted at hiring. Self-taught entry from CS or ECE backgrounds is common.
