AIIMS Patna

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Patna (AIIMS Patna) is a centrally funded Institute of National Importance established on 16 July 2012 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. Located at Aurangabad Road, Phulwari Sharif, Patna in Bihar, it operates under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and functions under the AIIMS Act 1956. AIIMS Patna is not subject to NAAC accreditation, as all new AIIMS under PMSSY hold statutory exempt status as Institutes of National Importance.

AIIMS Patna ranked #27 in the NIRF 2025 Medical category with a score of 59.24. Its hospital operates approximately 960-plus beds across 42 departments, with 28 modular operation theatres and specialty services including a Trauma and Emergency Centre, AYUSH Wing, Nuclear Medicine, PMR Wing, Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, and Telemedicine services. The institution hosts an Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centre designated under PVPI and a Centre of Excellence for COVID-19 care.

MBBS is the flagship programme with 125 seats per year. Postgraduate training covers 18-plus MD/MS specialties and multiple DM/M.Ch super-specialties with a total of approximately 117 PG seats per session. The B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing programme admits 75 students annually and M.Sc Nursing admits 12. MBBS tuition is heavily subsidised at approximately Rs 5,856 for the entire 5.5-year programme. Interns receive Rs 30,070 per month and PG Junior Residents receive Rs 64,000 per month, funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The 134-acre campus (100 acres main plus 34 acres residential) at Phulwari Sharif includes separate hostels for boys and girls, plus on-campus mess, bank, post office, and canteen facilities. Annual hostel charges of approximately Rs 2,728 (hostel rent, gymkhana, pot fund, and electricity) are among the most subsidised in India for a medical programme.

Admissions

MBBS admissions are conducted through NEET UG followed by MCC centralised counselling. AIIMS Patna MBBS seats (125 per year) fall under the All India Quota pool with no NRI, management, or state quota seats. Reservation follows central government norms: 27% OBC (non-creamy layer), 15% SC, 7.5% ST, and 10% EWS. Candidates register on the MCC portal (mcc.nic.in) after qualifying NEET UG.

MD and MS postgraduate admissions are through INI-CET conducted by AIIMS New Delhi twice a year. Candidates must hold an MBBS degree with one completed year of compulsory rotatory internship. The 3-year DM and M.Ch routes (post-MD/MS) are also through INI-SS. The 6-year integrated M.Ch Paediatric Surgery route (post-MBBS) has separate counselling within the INI-CET framework. B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing and M.Sc Nursing admissions are through the common AIIMS Nursing Entrance Test conducted by AIIMS New Delhi for all participating AIIMS campuses. The B.Sc Nursing programme is open to female candidates only. Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English, minimum 45% aggregate (40% for SC/ST). M.Sc Nursing requires a B.Sc Nursing degree with minimum 55% and one year of clinical experience.

Fees

AIIMS Patna follows the same subsidised fee structure as all new AIIMS under PMSSY. Total tuition and institutional charges for the entire 5.5-year MBBS programme (including hostel) amount to approximately Rs 5,856 in recurring annual charges, broken down as: tuition approximately Rs 1,000-1,335/year; hostel rent Rs 990/year; gymkhana Rs 220/year; pot fund Rs 1,320/year; electricity Rs 198/year. One-time refundable deposits include mess security (Rs 500) and hostel security (Rs 1,000). Mess charges of approximately Rs 4,000 per month are billed separately.

MBBS interns receive a monthly stipend of Rs 30,070 (revised January 2022 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) during the 12-month compulsory rotating internship conducted in the AIIMS Patna teaching hospital.

PG Junior Residents (MD/MS/DM/M.Ch trainees) receive Rs 64,000 per month during their training tenure. Senior Residents (post-PG, 3-year SR tenure) receive Rs 74,000 per month. Both amounts are mandated centrally by MoHFW and apply uniformly across all new AIIMS. B.Sc Nursing and M.Sc Nursing fee structures are equally subsidised.

Scholarships

AIIMS Patna's subsidised fee structure effectively removes most financial burden for admitted students. The following support mechanisms are available:

• PM Scholarship Scheme (PMSS): Wards of ex-servicemen and ex-coast guards receive Rs 3,000 per month (male) or Rs 3,250 per month (female). Applications through the Kendriya Sainik Board portal.
• National Scholarship Portal (NSP) schemes: OBC (central list), SC, and ST students qualify for post-matric scholarship support. Annual values range from Rs 6,000 to Rs 20,000 depending on category and family income.
• Bihar Post Matric Scholarship: Bihar state scholarship scheme available to SC, ST, OBC, and EWS students from Bihar. Applications through the Bihar government scholarship portal.
• Private scholarships: The Mahabir Prasad Singh Foundation offers Rs 10,000 per month to meritorious students; the Lotus Petal Foundation offers Rs 65,000 per year to girl students with 60-plus percent in Class 12 (25 recipients per year).
• EWS reservation: 10% of MBBS seats are reserved for Economically Weaker Sections (family income below Rs 8 lakh per year).

B.Sc Nursing and M.Sc Nursing students can access NSP post-matric scholarships. Applications go through scholarships.gov.in with income certificate and category documentation.

Campus

AIIMS Patna's 134-acre campus (100 acres main campus plus 34 acres residential) is located at Aurangabad Road, Phulwari Sharif, Patna, Bihar 801507. The campus integrates the medical college, nursing college, teaching hospital, research facilities, and student residential quarters within a compact but well-equipped site.

The teaching hospital operates approximately 960-plus beds across 42 departments, with 28 modular operation theatres. Departments include 18 specialty and 12 super-specialty units plus AYUSH, PMR, and Nuclear Medicine. The Trauma and Emergency Centre provides 74 beds with an 8-bed Trauma ICU and 24-hour care. An AYUSH Wing integrates traditional medicine. Research facilities include an Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centre (PVPI-designated), a Telemedicine Centre, and a Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. The institution participated in the GenomeIndia whole-genome sequencing project.

Student hostels provide separate accommodation for boys and girls within the 34-acre residential zone of the campus. Annual hostel charges of Rs 2,728 per year (hostel rent plus gymkhana, pot fund, and electricity) are among the lowest in India. Mess charges of approximately Rs 4,000 per month are billed separately; multiple mess options, a food plaza, a Sudha dairy parlour, and canteen facilities serve the student population. A bank branch, post office, and automated pharmacy are operational on campus.

Phulwari Sharif is a suburban locality approximately 7 km southwest of central Patna. Patna is connected by air (Patna Airport, approximately 14 km from campus) and by rail (Patna Junction on the Delhi-Kolkata Grand Chord line, approximately 10 km from campus). Local bus and auto services connect the campus to central Patna and the Bihar Sharif highway corridor.
