IIT Delhi was established in 1961 as the College of Engineering, Delhi, by the Government of India with collaboration from the United Kingdom's Imperial College London. It became the fifth Indian Institute of Technology in 1963 with the passing of the IIT Act amendment. The first batch of students started in 1961; the institute received Institute of National Importance status in 1963 and Institute of Eminence status in 2018 (one of six in India).
The 320-acre campus is located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi, adjacent to the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Across its first 65 years, IIT Delhi has produced more than 50,000 alumni and consistently ranks in the top 3 of NIRF Engineering since the framework began.
The institute today operates 18 academic departments offering B.Tech (13 branches), Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech, 8 branches), M.Tech (50+ specialisations), MBA at the Department of Management Studies (DMS), MS-by-Research, M.Sc., M.Des., and PhD across all departments. In 2025, IIT Delhi opened a satellite campus in Abu Dhabi (UAE), making it one of the first IITs to operate internationally.
IIT Delhi's distinguishing strengths within the IIT system:
Located in Delhi-NCR, the largest concentration of consulting, finance, and policy employers in India; recruiter density highest among top IITs
₹950+ crore in research grants in FY 2023-24; FITT (Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer) is among the largest tech-transfer offices in any IIT
200+ incubated startups via IIT-D Foundation for Innovation; alumni ventures include OYO, Snapdeal, Zomato (co-founder), GreyOrange
First IIT to open a fully operational international campus (IIT-D Abu Dhabi, August 2025; first 50-student B.Tech batch admitted)
Consistent feeder for civil services (UPSC), defence (DRDO recruiter), and policy roles in Delhi
Department of Management Studies (DMS) is consistently the top-ranked IIT MBA programme in NIRF; 2024-25 average package ₹26.50 LPA
Honest caveat: IIT Delhi's campus density is high (8,500 students on 320 acres vs IIT Madras' 10,000 on 617 acres). Hostel allocation in years 1-2 is twin-sharing with limited room; single occupancy is harder to secure than at less-dense IIT campuses. Delhi air quality (October-February AQI frequently > 300) is a documented concern.

Counsellor view: IIT Delhi is the strongest choice for candidates targeting consulting (BCG, Bain, McKinsey), finance (Goldman, Morgan Stanley), or policy / government-adjacent careers, Delhi-NCR adjacency genuinely matters. IIT Bombay edges it out on CSE pay and Mumbai exposure for tech founders. IIT Madras outranks both for research output and entrepreneurship pipeline.

Campus size, faculty strength, hostel facilities, and academic infrastructure.
For 2025 JoSAA Round 1, IIT Delhi CSE General OS closing rank was AIR 99. Round 6 closing rank was AIR 165. Realistically, candidates with JEE Advanced AIR under 100 (General) have a comfortable shot at IIT Delhi CSE; those AIR 100-200 (General) have a Match-tier chance via Round 6 or female-only quota.
Both are within margin of error on academic rigour. IIT Bombay edges on highest CSE placement (₹39.10 LPA vs ₹37.85 LPA median 2024-25) and highest international offers. IIT Delhi has the strongest consulting/finance/government recruiter density due to Delhi-NCR location. Decision usually comes down to city, climate, and target career sector, not academic quality.
For 2025-26: General category ≈ ₹3,00,000 / year (₹2,00,000 tuition + ₹1,00,000 hostel/mess/other). 4-year total ≈ ₹12,00,000. SC/ST/PwD students pay no tuition. Income-based remission applies under ₹5 lakh / year.
For 2024-25: 1,150+ offers across 250+ recruiters; median CTC ₹22.10 LPA across all eligible UG students; highest international offer ₹1.95 crore; 89% participation rate; 234 PPOs. Branch-wise median ranges from ₹37.85 LPA (CSE) to ₹11.40 LPA (Civil).
Yes. IIT Delhi opened its Abu Dhabi campus in August 2025 with the first 50-student B.Tech batch in Computer Science and Energy Engineering. It is the first fully operational international IIT campus.
Documented concern October to February when Delhi NCR AQI frequently exceeds 300 (hazardous category). Air purifiers are deployed in academic and lab spaces. Outdoor sports activity is reduced in November to January.
DMS (Department of Management Studies) offers a 2-year MBA admitting via CAT (≈ 96 percentile cutoff). Also MBA Telecommunication (Bharti School) and Executive MBA. 2024-25 average placement at DMS: ₹26.50 LPA.
