IIT Patna

Indian Institute of Technology Patna (IIT Patna or IITP) is a central government Institute of National Importance, established on August 6, 2008, and located at Bihta, approximately 35 to 40 km west of Patna city, Bihar. IIT Patna's 500-acre permanent campus at Bihta hosts the Aryabhatta Supercomputing Centre and PHN Technology Centre, among other national research facilities. IIT Patna ranked #19 in NIRF 2025 Engineering (score: 64.52), #36 in NIRF 2025 Overall (score: 57.63), and #39 in NIRF 2025 Research (score: 48.75).

IIT Patna has approximately 670 B.Tech students, 161 M.Tech students, and 259 PhD scholars, supported by 101 faculty members. The institute offers 11 B.Tech branches, reflecting a substantial expansion of programmes since its establishment, including newer interdisciplinary branches such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Chemical Science and Technology, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

B.Tech Programmes, 4 Years

Admission via JEE Advanced through JoSAA (institute code 112). IIT Patna offers eleven B.Tech branches:

Category-wise reservation within the gender-neutral pool follows standard IIT norms: OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, EWS 10%, Open 40.5%.

IIT Patna's Centre for Educational Technology (CEP) offers an online and hybrid MBA programme:

• Duration: 2 years (4 semesters) minimum, up to 4 years maximum

• Admission: No CAT or GMAT required; open to graduates with minimum 50% marks
• Mode: Online and hybrid (not a traditional residential MBA on main campus)

Fees

B.Tech total cost for 4 years is approximately Rs 10.4 lakh (Rs 1,64,750 in semester 1 and Rs 1,25,000 per semester thereafter). Average annual cost is approximately Rs 2.6 lakh, covering tuition, hostel, gymkhana, transport, and medical insurance. SC/ST/PwD students receive full tuition waiver; only non-tuition charges apply. Income-based remissions are available from the Ministry of Education for families earning below Rs 5 lakh per year. The CEP online MBA has a total fee of Rs 3.28 lakh (Rs 82,000 per semester). M.Tech tuition is Rs 25,000 per semester; GATE students effectively have zero net cost due to the Rs 12,400 monthly stipend.

Scholarships

Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship: For eligible General/OBC-NCL B.Tech students. Eligibility: minimum CPI of 6.50 and family annual income at or below Rs 4.5 lakh. Benefit: full tuition fee waiver plus Rs 1,000 per month pocket money for 10 months per year. Apply through the academics office.

SC/ST MCM Scholarship: For SC/ST students. Benefit: free messing, free hostel, and Rs 250 per month pocket allowance. No CPI floor required.

SC/ST/PwD Tuition Fee Waiver: Unconditional 100% tuition fee exemption for all SC/ST and PwD students.

Top Class Education Scheme for SC Students: For SC students with family annual income below Rs 6 lakh. Benefit: full tuition fee, Rs 2,220 per month living allowance, Rs 3,000 per year books allowance, and Rs 45,000 one-time computer allowance. IIT Patna has 12 seats reserved under this scheme.

Ishan Uday Special Scholarship: For students from North-East states. Benefit: Rs 5,400 to Rs 7,800 per month depending on the type of programme.

Donor Scholarships: Kedar Nath Das Memorial Scholarship (Rs 10,000 for CSE batch topper) and Jagdish Nath Tripathi Scholarship (Rs 30,000 for Civil Engineering student with family income below Rs 1 lakh).

Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities: Rs 1,600 per month cash assistance plus Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 per year disability allowance under the MoE scheme.

Campus

IIT Patna's 500-acre permanent campus is at Kanpa Road, Bihta, District Patna, Bihar 801106, approximately 35 to 40 km west of Patna city.

Research facilities: Aryabhatta Supercomputing Centre (high-performance computing) and PHN Technology Centre serve institute-wide and national research programmes. Academic departments span 10 areas: Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Materials Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

Hostels: 3 boys' hostels (approximately 912 rooms across four blocks A, B, C, D) and 1 girls' hostel (108 rooms across two blocks). Married research scholar apartments available. Total residential capacity approximately 1,200 to 1,500 students.

Sports: Basketball, volleyball, tennis, and badminton courts, cricket ground, and football field. Additional 7 boys' hostels and 2 girls' hostels are planned as part of campus expansion.
