As an NIT, NIT Patna provides a full tuition fee waiver for SC, ST, and differently-abled students regardless of family income. Students from families with annual income below Rs 1 lakh per year receive a full tuition waiver; income between Rs 1 and Rs 5 lakh receives a two-thirds remission (approximately Rs 41,667 per year tuition). General and OBC-NCL students with family income above Rs 5 lakh pay full tuition of Rs 1.25 lakh per year. Students may also apply for central government Post Matric and merit-cum-means scholarship schemes through the National Scholarship Portal and the Bihar state scholarship portal.
The 36-acre main campus at Ashok Rajpath, Patna, has six boys hostels (Aryabhatta, Brahmaputra, Bagmati, Kosi, Kosi Extension, and Sone) and two girls hostels (Ganga and Kadimbini), with common rooms, dining halls, and indoor recreation areas. Campus facilities include academic and departmental blocks, a central library, computer labs, a sports ground, a health centre, and the Training and Placement Cell. Patna Junction railway station is approximately 5.5 km from campus. The 125-acre permanent campus at Sikandarpur village, Bihta, is under active development and is planned to accommodate the full student strength once complete.
National Institute of Technology Patna, commonly known as NITP, traces its origin to 1886 when it was established as the Survey Training School by the colonial government. It was reorganised as the Bihar College of Engineering in 1924, one of the earliest engineering institutions in eastern India. The institute was redesignated the National Institute of Technology Patna on 28 January 2004 and declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act in 2007. The main campus occupies 36 acres on Ashok Rajpath along the southern bank of the Ganga in Patna city, approximately 5.5 km from Patna Junction railway station. A new 125-acre permanent campus at Sikandarpur village, Bihta, approximately 40 km from Patna, is under active development.
NIT Patna offers eight 4-year B.Tech programmes: Computer Science and Engineering (151 seats), Civil Engineering (116), Electrical Engineering (116), Mechanical Engineering (117), Electronics and Communication Engineering (100), VLSI Engineering (80), AI and Data Science (75), and Mechatronics and Automation Engineering (26); total approximately 781 seats. Nine 5-year dual-degree B.Tech plus M.Tech programmes in specialisations including Data Science, Cyber Security, VLSI, Power Systems, Material Science, and Chemical Technology add approximately 200 seats. A 5-year B.Arch with 40 total seats is admitted via JEE Main Paper 2. All programmes are through JEE Main and JoSAA (institute code 214).
NIRF 2025 ranked NIT Patna 53rd in Engineering (score 53.89), up from rank 55 in 2024 (score 52.28) and 56 in 2023 (score 50.16), reflecting steady improvement. The Architecture programme is ranked 13th in NIRF 2025 (score 60.16), up from rank 27 in NIRF 2024 (score 54.19), making it one of the strongest Architecture programmes among all NITs. The 2024-25 placement season saw approximately 505 on-campus offers for B.Tech and B.Arch graduates, with an average CTC of Rs 9.9 LPA, median of Rs 8 LPA, and highest of Rs 41.37 LPA.
NIT Patna's B.Arch programme ranked 13th in NIRF 2025 Architecture (score 60.16), up from rank 27 in 2024 and 19 in 2023, making it one of only a handful of NITs with a top-15 Architecture ranking nationally. JoSAA 2025 OS quota B.Arch closing rank approximately 1,187 (JEE Main Paper 2).
The dual-degree portfolio (B.Tech plus M.Tech in Data Science, Cyber Security, VLSI, Power Systems, Material Science, Chemical Technology, etc.) gives JEE Main-qualified students access to niche PG specialisations without a separate GATE exam, at NIT fee structures.
Engineering rank has improved each year: 56 (2023) to 55 (2024) to 53 (2025), with score rising from 50.16 to 53.89, reflecting real improvement in Graduate Outcomes (78.40 in 2025) and Research sub-scores (55.04).
The 36-acre main campus at Ashok Rajpath is inside Patna city, approximately 5.5 km from Patna Junction, with good rail links to Kolkata, Delhi, and Varanasi. Recruiters from banking, IT, and infrastructure sectors targeting Bihar and eastern India regularly visit.
JoSAA 2025 OS quota Round 6 closing ranks (Open GN): CSE 14,996; AI&DS 16,537; ECE 20,286; VLSI 26,872; Mechatronics 24,053; EE 27,921; ME 36,958; Civil 46,400.
Honest caveat: NIT Patna's placement average of Rs 9.9 LPA (median Rs 8 LPA) is materially lower than peer NITs such as NIT Kurukshetra (avg Rs 13.21 LPA) or NIT Durgapur (avg Rs 12.61 LPA), reflecting a smaller recruiter pool accessing Patna compared to Delhi NCR or metro-adjacent NITs. The main campus is 36 acres inside Patna city -- compact compared to most NIT campuses -- with a 125-acre Bihta campus under development but not yet operational for students. Placement figures represent on-campus offers only; off-campus and PPO placements add further but are harder to verify. NAAC accreditation grade A (score 3.10) cycle year could not be confirmed from the NAAC portal directly.
