It opened with three undergraduate branches, Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering, with an intake of 35 students each. The college was initially affiliated to the University of Bombay, moved to Gujarat University in 1949, and is now affiliated to Gujarat Technological University (GTU). It is administered by the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Gujarat, and sits opposite Gujarat University in Navrangpura, Ahmedabad.

LDCE has participated in the NIRF Engineering category for 2023, 2024, and 2025, but does not appear in any of NIRF's published rank bands for any of these three years (2024 and 2025 rank bands extend to 201-300; the 2023 bands only extend to 151-200). Separately, the college's own official social media (LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook) cites a #1 position with a 4.64/5 CGPA in the Gujarat State Institutional Ranking Framework (GSIRF) 2024 Engineering category, a state-level ranking distinct from NIRF.
LDCE has on-campus hostel accommodation with seven blocks, six for men and one for women, with mess and common areas. Room configurations and current fees should be confirmed against the college's own hostel page before quoting a specific figure.
Founded in 1948 through Kasturbhai Lalbhai's land and cash donation, LDCE has operated continuously as a government institute under GTU affiliation.
