Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur, commonly called MNIT Jaipur, is a centrally funded technical institute located on Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg in Malviya Nagar, Jaipur, Rajasthan. It was set up in 1963 as Malaviya Regional Engineering College (MREC), jointly run by the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, and was among the Regional Engineering Colleges upgraded to National Institute of Technology status on 26 June 2002. It was declared an Institute of National Importance under the NITs Act on 15 August 2007.
The campus spans about 317 acres (1.28 square kilometres) in the heart of Jaipur, adjacent to Malviya Nagar and the Jhalana forest reserve. MNIT Jaipur is a fully residential institute with ten boys hostels and two girls hostels of about 3,000 combined capacity. The largest hostel, named after Sri Aurobindo, houses about 950 students in single rooms. Academic blocks, the central library, computer centre, sports complex, health centre, and faculty quarters all sit within the campus.
MNIT Jaipur offers B.Tech programmes in nine branches: Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering, and a five-year B.Arch in Architecture and Planning. Admission to all B.Tech programmes is through JEE Main, followed by seat allocation by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). B.Arch admission uses JEE Main Paper 2. Postgraduate offerings include M.Tech through GATE, MBA through CAT, M.Sc, M.Plan, and PhD programmes across departments.
As of the latest disclosure the institute had over 5,000 undergraduate students plus postgraduate and doctoral cohorts, supported by more than 150 faculty members. The current Director is Professor Narayana Prasad Padhy.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, MNIT Jaipur was ranked 42 in the Engineering category with a score of 57.45 (up from 43 in 2024 and 37 in 2023), 12 in Architecture and Planning with a score of 60.48, 50 in Research with a score of 45.02, and 77 in the Overall category with a score of 51.88.
The 2024-25 placement cycle saw 240 companies visit the campus and 540 undergraduate students placed for a 76.8 per cent UG placement rate, with 186 postgraduate students also placed. The B.Tech highest package was ₹64 LPA, the average ₹11.06 LPA, and the median ₹8 LPA, with 132 pre-placement offers made. The Computer Science and Engineering branch logged the strongest numbers with a CSE average package of about ₹19.80 LPA, while ECE recorded an average of about ₹16.21 LPA and Mechanical about ₹10.74 LPA. Top recruiters included Google, DE Shaw, Oracle, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, JP Morgan, Apple, Mercedes-Benz, Deloitte, Flipkart, and Accenture.
The B.Tech tuition fee is ₹62,500 per semester for general candidates. Including all mandatory academic charges (development, library, computer, laboratory, and other institute fees), the total academic fee per year works out to approximately ₹1.69 lakh, with the full four-year programme fee totalling about ₹6.76 lakh. Hostel and mess charges add about ₹1.48 lakh over the programme. Full tuition waivers apply for SC, ST, and PwD candidates and for those with family income below ₹1 lakh, with partial waivers up to family income of ₹5 lakh. Students from SC, ST, OBC, EWS and low-income backgrounds may additionally apply for central government Post Matric Scholarship and merit-cum-means scholarship schemes through the National Scholarship Portal.
Notable alumni include Amit Ranjan, co-founder and COO of SlideShare; Sandeep Poundrik, IAS officer who took charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Steel; and Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Electronics Limited.
MNIT Jaipur was set up in 1963 as MREC and upgraded to NIT status in 2002, giving it a deeper alumni and recruiter base than newer NITs, and it sits at NIRF Engineering rank 42 in 2025.
The Computer Science and Engineering branch recorded a 2024-25 average package of around ₹19.80 LPA and a highest package of ₹64 LPA, with recruiters including Google, DE Shaw, Oracle, Goldman Sachs, and Qualcomm.
Total B.Tech academic fee is about ₹1.69 lakh per year (₹62,500/semester tuition plus mandatory charges), totalling ₹6.76 lakh over four years, with full waivers for SC, ST, and PwD candidates and partial waivers based on family income.
B.Arch at MNIT Jaipur is among the most respected nationally, ranked 12 in the NIRF Architecture 2025 list, taught inside a centrally funded NIT setting.
Fully residential 317-acre campus in Malviya Nagar, Jaipur, with ten boys hostels and two girls hostels of about 3,000 combined capacity, alongside academic, sports, and central library facilities.
Honest caveat: MNIT Jaipur is a strong but mid-table NIT. NIRF Engineering rank has slipped from 37 in 2023 to 42 in 2025, and the overall B.Tech median package of about ₹8 LPA in 2024-25 is well below the CSE average because non-circuit branches like Civil, Chemical, and Metallurgy have noticeably weaker outcomes than CSE or ECE. CSE remains very competitive, with JoSAA 2025 general all-India closing rank around 6,013, but the next-tier branches see substantially higher closing ranks and lower placement averages.
