NIT Goa was established in 2010 under the NIT Act, 2007, one of ten new National Institutes of Technology sanctioned in the 11th Five Year Plan at a provisioned cost of ₹250 crore. It began functioning from a transit campus inside Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi, Ponda, before the Goa government transferred about 113 acres of land at Cuncolim, South Goa, in July 2017.
The institute's seven departments span Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences. Its B.Tech programme spans five branches with 224 JoSAA/CSAB seats and 34 DASA seats for foreign nationals, NRIs and PIOs. M.Tech is offered in three programmes, Computer Science and Engineering, VLSI, and Power Electronics and Power Systems, with 80 total seats admitted primarily through CCMT, alongside sponsored, DRDO-sponsored and self-financed Non-GATE routes. Ph.D. is offered across all seven departments, including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics specialisations within Applied Sciences and Economics and English within Humanities and Social Sciences.
B.Tech admission runs through JEE Main scores allocated by JoSAA and CSAB counselling, with DASA seats filled separately on JEE Main ranks for foreign nationals and NRIs. M.Tech admission requires a valid GATE score through CCMT counselling, with sponsored and DRDO-sponsored seats filled separately and any seats left vacant after these rounds opened to a self-financed Non-GATE track. Ph.D. admission runs through the institute's own Full-Time, Part-Time, Self-Financed and Sponsored schemes.
The institute's own NIRF 2025 and 2026 data submissions both explicitly answer that it does not hold a valid NAAC accreditation. NIT Goa holds an Engineering rank band of 101-150 in the official NIRF 2025 rankings, with no numeric rank published for institutes in that band, and does not appear in the Overall category rankings.
