Osmania Medical College traces its origin to the Hyderabad Medical School, founded in 1846 under the fifth Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawab Afzal-ud-Dowla, making it one of the oldest medical institutions in India. It took its present name and structure in 1919-20 alongside the founding of Osmania University by the seventh Nizam. The college is a government institution affiliated with the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), Warangal, and is recognised by the National Medical Commission. Its primary teaching hospital is Osmania General Hospital, a heritage 1910 building on the banks of the Musi river, along with attached specialty hospitals including Niloufer Hospital for paediatrics.
The college is credited with pioneering 19th-century anaesthesia research (the "Hyderabad Chloroform Commission") and counts Rupa Bai Furdoonji, widely regarded as the world's first qualified female anaesthesiologist (1889), among its early graduates.
