Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) began as University College of Engineering (UCE), Burla, established on 12 August 1956 as a constituent college of Utkal University, with an initial intake of 20 students across Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. It was set up to train engineers for the Hirakud Dam project nearby. Administrative control passed to Sambalpur University in January 1967 and then to Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) in July 2002.
In 2009, the Government of Odisha converted UCE into a non-affiliating unitary university under Odisha Act 9 of 2009, and renamed it after Veer Surendra Sai, the Odia freedom fighter who led resistance against British rule in the Sambalpur region for nearly four decades before dying in Asirgarh Jail in 1884. VSSUT is Odisha's oldest engineering institution and is located at the foothills of the Hirakud Dam in Burla, Sambalpur district.

VSSUT runs 12 halls of residence, split roughly evenly between men and women, with a combined capacity of about 4,000 students. Campus facilities include a 400m athletic track, sports courts, a gymnasium, a central library, and a central workshop.
Founded in 1956 as UCE Burla, it predates every other engineering college in the state, formalized as a unitary technical university in 2009.
The university sits at the foothills of the Hirakud Dam, one of the reasons it was founded, giving it a large, self-contained campus away from city congestion.
Offers Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunication, Computer Science, Information Technology, Chemical, Mining, and Architecture branches at UG, PG, and PhD levels.
12 halls of residence house roughly 4,000 students, letting most students live on campus through their degree.
Admission runs through OJEE counselling alongside JEE Main, with the large majority of seats reserved for Odisha-domicile candidates.
30 courses offered. Fees in INR lakhs.
