CMAT is a national-level entrance test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to AICTE-approved MBA, PGDM, and MCA programmes across India. Unlike CAT, which is run by a rotating IIM and feeds primarily into the 21 IIMs plus a large non-IIM B-school pool, CMAT is conducted by a single central testing body and is accepted by more than 1,000 AICTE-approved institutions, university management departments, and affiliated colleges nationally. CMAT 2026 was held on January 25, 2026, in a single shift, and NTA declared the result on February 17, 2026. The CMAT 2027 Information Bulletin has not yet been released as of this review; based on the previous three cycles it is expected around October to November 2026, with the exam itself expected around the fourth Sunday of January 2027. For many candidates, CMAT also functions as a parallel or backup attempt alongside CAT, since its registration and exam window falls months after CAT's November sitting and its format carries a meaningfully lower difficulty ceiling.

CMAT eligibility requires a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. NTA itself does not prescribe a minimum aggregate percentage to sit the exam, but most participating institutes require at least 50% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA for general-category admission, reduced to 45% for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and PwD candidates, so treat the 50%/45% figures as the practical admission benchmark even though NTA's own registration eligibility is broader. Final-year students can appear, provided they complete their degree with the required percentage before the institute's admission deadline for the relevant academic session.
| Age limit | None specified by NTA. There is no minimum or maximum age restriction to register for or appear in CMAT. |
| Educational qualification | A bachelor's degree in any discipline (Arts, Commerce, Science, Engineering, or any other stream) from a university recognised by the UGC, AICTE, or an equivalent statutory body. NTA's own eligibility criteria carry no minimum-percentage clause. |
| NTA's own minimum aggregate for registration | None specified; any pass in a recognised bachelor's degree qualifies to sit the exam. |
| Practical minimum for admission, General / EWS / NC-OBC (institute-level requirement) | 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, as required by most participating AICTE-approved institutes. |
| Practical minimum for admission, SC / ST / OBC-NCL / PwD (institute-level requirement) | 45% marks or equivalent CGPA, as required by most participating AICTE-approved institutes. |
| Final-year and final-semester students | Eligible to apply and appear, provided they can produce proof of passing the qualifying examination with the required percentage before admission commences for the relevant academic session. |
| Number of attempts | CMAT runs once a year, so a candidate gets one attempt per cycle. There is no separate lifetime attempt cap; a candidate can reappear every year. |
| Nationality and domicile | Open to Indian citizens. No domicile-based reservation applies directly, though the score is used by state-run bodies such as Maharashtra's DTE for their own All India category quota. |
CMAT registration is fully online at cmat.nta.nic.in. The CMAT 2026 window stayed open for about five and a half weeks, from October 17 to November 24, 2025, with a short correction window immediately after closure.

CMAT has 100 questions split evenly across five sections: Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship, 20 questions each. All 400 marks are earned across a single 180-minute window with no official per-section time limit, a structural difference from CAT's strict 40-minutes-per-section lock that changes exam-day strategy meaningfully: a CMAT candidate who runs long on one section can borrow time from another, something a CAT candidate can never do.
| Mode | Computer-based test (CBT) |
| Duration | 180 minutes (3 hours), no official sectional time limit |
| Sections | Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, Innovation & Entrepreneurship |
| Questions per section | 20 each |
| Total questions | 100 |
| Total marks | 400 (80 per section) |
| Marks per correct answer | +4 |
| Negative marking | -1 per incorrect answer |
| Unattempted | 0, no penalty |

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship section was introduced for CMAT 2021 as an optional fifth section whose score did not count toward the percentile. From CMAT 2022 onward, it became compulsory, and its score has counted toward the overall percentile in every cycle since, a change several older competitor pages still describe incorrectly. Registration volume also fell meaningfully between the two most recent completed cycles: CMAT 2025 registered roughly 74,000 candidates across two shifts in 178 centres; CMAT 2026 registered 53,453 candidates in a single shift across 259 centres, which directly affects whether cross-shift normalisation applies in a given cycle.
Under CMAT's +4/-1 marking for a four-option multiple-choice question, the break-even point for a blind guess sits at 20%: below that, a random guess loses expected value; above it, a guess gains. This is a meaningfully more forgiving guessing threshold than CAT's +3/-1 MCQ scheme, where break-even sits at 25%. Eliminating even one wrong option before guessing pushes the expected value further positive. Because there is no per-section time lock, a candidate can also bank easier sections first and return to harder ones with the remaining time, a tactic that is structurally impossible on CAT's rigid 40-minutes-per-section format.
NTA has never published a fixed, unit-by-unit CMAT syllabus document the way it has for JEE Main and NEET UG. The topic breakdown below is derived from the CMAT Information Bulletin's own section descriptions plus analysis of recent CMAT papers, and should be read as a pattern description rather than an official curriculum.
This section blends standard MBA-entrance arithmetic and algebra with data-reading questions, similar in spirit to CAT's QA and DI content but without CAT's set-based integrated format.
| Unit | Weightage | Key topics |
|---|---|---|
| Arithmetic | High frequency | Percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, averages, mixtures |
| Algebra | Moderate frequency | Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, basic functions |
| Data Interpretation | Moderate frequency | Tables, bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts requiring straightforward reading and calculation rather than CAT-style multi-step integrated caselets |
Logical Reasoning tests analytical and pattern-based thinking through standalone questions rather than the linked-set format CAT uses in DILR.
| Unit | Weightage | Key topics |
|---|---|---|
| Analytical puzzles and arrangements | High frequency | Seating arrangements, sequencing, and ordering puzzles |
| Coding-decoding and series | Moderate frequency | Letter, number, and symbol coding patterns; number and alphabet series |
| Statement-based reasoning | Moderate frequency | Syllogisms, statement-conclusion questions, blood relations |
Shorter and generally more straightforward than CAT's VARC section, both in passage length and in vocabulary difficulty.
| Unit | Weightage | Key topics |
|---|---|---|
| Reading Comprehension | High frequency | Shorter passages relative to CAT's RC set, generally more straightforward in vocabulary and structure |
| Vocabulary and grammar | Moderate frequency | Synonyms, antonyms, error spotting, sentence correction, fill-in-the-blanks |
| Para-jumbles and sentence completion | Moderate frequency | Rearranging sentences into logical order, completing a partial sentence or paragraph |
General Awareness is the section most competitor pages under-cover relative to its actual difficulty, since it rewards sustained daily reading over intensive short-term drilling and cannot be crammed the way quant formulas can.
| Unit | Weightage | Key topics |
|---|---|---|
| Static General Knowledge | Roughly 70-80% of the section | History, geography, polity, economy, awards, sports, books and authors |
| Current Affairs | Roughly 20-30% of the section | Business, politics, sports, awards, and government scheme news, generally drawn from the 90 days preceding the exam |
Compulsory and counted toward the percentile since the CMAT 2022 cycle; tests entrepreneurship literacy rather than quantitative or verbal skill.
| Unit | Weightage | Key topics |
|---|---|---|
| Entrepreneurship concepts and terminology | Moderate frequency | Basic startup and business vocabulary, forms of business organisation |
| Government schemes | Recurring | Startup India, Stand-Up India, MSME-related schemes and initiatives |
| Business and startup current affairs | Recurring | Notable Indian startups, funding rounds, and entrepreneurship-related news from the months preceding the exam |
CMAT rewards breadth and accuracy across five distinct sections more than it rewards deep specialisation in any one, and its lack of a sectional time lock means time management, not sectional survival, is the core exam-day skill. The plans below assume a late-January exam date and work backward from it, written for the current CMAT 2027 cycle, whose notification is expected around October to November 2026.
12-month plan
Months 1-4 (now through October 2026, pre-notification): Foundation. Across all five sections. For Quant and DI, rebuild Class 10 to graduation-level arithmetic and algebra fluency, since CMAT's quant ceiling sits well below CAT's. For Logical Reasoning, drill puzzle and arrangement question types until pattern recognition becomes fast rather than effortful. For Language Comprehension, read one article daily from a serious publication and build a working vocabulary list. For General Awareness, this is the highest-leverage window of the entire plan: start a daily current-affairs habit now, since a candidate who begins GA reading four months out has a compounding advantage no last-month cram session can replicate.
Months 5-8 (notification through registration, roughly November 2026 to January 2027): Structured mocks. Once the CMAT 2027 Information Bulletin lands, shift into structured mock practice. Begin one full-length mock per week, and start a dedicated General Awareness notebook logging every unfamiliar fact encountered in mocks and news reading, reviewed weekly.
Months 9-12 (final stretch into the January exam): Mock-heavy phase. Two to three full mocks per week, with equal time spent reviewing GA misses as reviewing quant and LR misses, since GA is the section most likely to separate a strong CMAT score from an average one at the margin.
6-month plan
Months 1-2 (July-August 2026): Combine concept and practice. Across Quant, DI, and LR. Begin daily current-affairs reading immediately rather than deferring it, since GA has the longest compounding runway of any CMAT section.
Months 3-4 (September-October 2026): Begin one full mock per week. Once practice materials and past papers are accessible; the CMAT 2027 Information Bulletin should land within this window, so treat its release as the trigger to shift into full-mock mode.
Months 5-6 (November 2026-January 2027): Mock-heavy. Rising to two to three mocks per week in December and January, with a dedicated GA revision pass covering the prior 90 days of current affairs in the final two weeks before the exam.
90-day plan
Days 1-30: Triage hard. CMAT's shorter question format and lack of sectional time pressure mean the highest-yield early investment is closing obvious knowledge gaps in Quant and LR while starting GA reading immediately, since a 90-day GA effort still beats no GA effort at all, even though it will never fully substitute for a longer runway.
Days 31-60: One full mock every alternate day. Because there is no sectional time lock, practise a deliberate section-ordering strategy during mocks (for example, GA and LR first if those are a candidate's stronger sections, saving DI for last) rather than defaulting to the paper's printed order.
Days 61-90: Stamina and final GA pass. Mocks three times a week, tapering in the final ten days to review only, with a concentrated final GA pass covering the most recent 60 to 90 days of current affairs, since that window carries the highest concentration of testable material.
CMAT's underlying content across Quant, LR, and Language Comprehension sits closer to graduation-level general aptitude than to CAT's harder ceiling, so a full classroom coaching programme is rarely necessary for those three sections alone. Where coaching genuinely helps is structured General Awareness content delivery and a disciplined mock-test habit, both of which self-study candidates often under-invest in. A standalone CMAT-focused mock series from IMS, T.I.M.E., or Career Launcher, typically priced in the low thousands of rupees, paired with a daily current-affairs habit built from a serious newspaper and a monthly compilation magazine, covers most of what a full coaching programme would otherwise provide, at a fraction of the cost.
Coaching remains genuinely useful for candidates who are also preparing for CAT in parallel and want a single structured programme covering both exams' overlapping quant and verbal content, since most CAT-focused coaching institutes fold CMAT preparation into the same broader MBA-entrance track.
Topper insight (pending)
Verified CMAT topper from the 2026 cycle, high percentile with scorecard verification, willing to be quoted by name. Without this, the page reads like every other generic prep article. Format to be used once sourced: "[Name], [percentile] percentile in CMAT 2026, recommends [specific tactic]. '[direct quote in their own words],' they say."
| Book | Subject | Price (₹) | One-line take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lucent's General Knowledge | General Awareness | 200 | The default static-GK reference for a reason; dense but genuinely comprehensive for the static 70-80% of the GA section. |
| Manorama Yearbook (current edition) | General Awareness | 300 | Strong current-affairs compilation, best used as a once-a-year read-through rather than a daily reference. |
| How to Prepare for Quantitative Aptitude for CAT, Arun Sharma | Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation | 500 | Overkill in places for CMAT's actual quant ceiling, but the arithmetic and algebra chapters map directly onto CMAT's QTDI section. |
| Word Power Made Easy, Norman Lewis | Language Comprehension | 250 | A genuinely useful vocabulary builder, though its density suits a longer runway better than a last-month cram. |
A standalone CMAT mock series from IMS, T.I.M.E., or Career Launcher is generally sufficient without a full classroom programme, priced well below CAT-focused test series given CMAT's shorter, less speed-intensive format. Candidates preparing for both CAT and CMAT in the same cycle typically find their CAT mock series already covers the overlapping Quant, LR, and Verbal content, leaving only General Awareness practice to source separately.
The activity with the highest score-to-effort ratio in exam prep is mock-test analysis. Solving a mock takes hours; analysing it correctly takes longer. Most candidates skip the analysis. The candidates who score well do not.
| Year | Difficulty | Hardest section | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Easy to moderate | General Awareness | Single-shift cycle; GA breadth remained the main differentiator between strong and average scorers |
| 2025 | Moderate | General Awareness | Two-shift cycle; QTDI and LR reported as calculator-free but straightforward |
| 2024 | Easy to moderate | General Awareness | Innovation and Entrepreneurship content skewed toward government-scheme and startup-funding questions |
| 2023 | Moderate | Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation | DI sets reported as slightly more calculation-heavy than the two preceding cycles |
| 2022 | Moderate | General Awareness | First cycle with Innovation and Entrepreneurship counted toward the percentile |
Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation: Arithmetic topics (percentages, profit and loss, time-speed-distance) recur most, with DI sets generally limited to single tables or charts rather than CAT-style multi-step caselets. Logical Reasoning: arrangement and sequencing puzzles and coding-decoding questions appear in nearly every recent cycle. Language Comprehension: shorter RC passages paired with a steady mix of para-jumbles and sentence-correction items. General Awareness: current-affairs questions concentrate heavily on the 60 to 90 days preceding the exam, with government schemes and awards recurring across cycles. Innovation and Entrepreneurship: startup and entrepreneurship current affairs, plus recurring questions on Startup India and MSME-related schemes. Note: NTA does not publish CMAT question papers as a public downloadable archive; reconstructed past-year sets on coaching platforms are based on candidate recall, not an official release.

Our CMAT 2027 percentile-cutoff projection uses the CMAT 2026 cycle's institute-reported thresholds as the anchor, applying a drift correction for year-on-year registration volume changes. This model has not been calibrated against confirmed CMAT 2027 figures, since the exam itself has not taken place; treat any 2027-specific number as provisional until individual institutes publish their own criteria after the CMAT 2027 result. These figures are aggregated from institute-published admission criteria and education-sector reporting across recent cycles rather than a single unified source, since CMAT itself does not publish institute-wise cutoffs.
Use the College Predictor with full methodology disclosure →CMAT results are declared as a percentile scorecard roughly three to four weeks after the exam. CMAT 2026 results were declared by NTA on February 17, 2026, around 9:00 PM, alongside the final answer key. Scorecards are downloadable from cmat.nta.nic.in using the application number and password or date of birth.
A CMAT scorecard is valid for one admission cycle only, the academic session immediately following the result. A candidate who wants to use a CMAT score for a later admission cycle must reappear the following January.
CMAT is designed to run across multiple shifts when candidate volume requires it, and NTA applies a percentile-equalisation normalisation method in any cycle that does use more than one shift, comparing each shift's score distribution rather than raw scores directly, with the lower of the two shifts' percentile at a given threshold becoming the effective cutoff for that category across all shifts. The CMAT 2026 cycle specifically ran in a single shift, so no cross-shift normalisation was required that year; this is a cycle-dependent detail worth checking each year rather than a fixed rule.
CMAT does not offer rechecking or re-evaluation of scores. The result is generated against the final published answer key, and NTA does not accept requests to re-examine an individual candidate's score once declared. Only errors in personal information, not scoring, can be raised with the NTA helpdesk.
CMAT itself has no single central counselling body the way JoSAA runs counselling for JEE Main. Each of the 1,000-plus participating AICTE-approved institutes independently invites shortlisted candidates and runs its own Group Discussion, Written Ability Test, or Personal Interview process, a structural picture closer to CUET's per-institute model than to JoSAA's single national portal. The one significant exception is Maharashtra's Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), which runs a Centralised Admission Process (CAP) for MBA and MMS seats at state-affiliated institutes, including JBIMS Mumbai. A separate All India (AI) category, typically 15% to 20% of seats, accepts scores from any of six national exams: MAH-CET itself, CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, ATMA, or GMAT. A CMAT holder does not need to also sit the state CET, but must still separately register on the CAP portal to participate.
JBIMS Mumbai is the clearest, most prominent named example of the Maharashtra AIQ linkage in practice. Its total intake carries roughly 15% of seats reserved for the All India category, filled through the CAT/XAT/CMAT/MAT/ATMA/GMAT-eligible route inside the same DTE CAP process that allocates the remaining 85% of seats to Maharashtra State candidates via MAH-CET. The All India quota fee at JBIMS runs meaningfully higher than the Maharashtra State quota fee for the same programme, a detail worth flagging for an out-of-state candidate weighing a CMAT-based application against a Maharashtra-domiciled candidate's CET-based one.
A CMAT score is a route into Maharashtra's All India quota, not a replacement for understanding the CAP process itself. A candidate holding only a CMAT score and no MAH-CET score must still register for CAP separately and follow its own document-verification and choice-filling deadlines; skipping that registration step because "I already have a CMAT score" is one of the most common and entirely avoidable ways an eligible candidate misses the Maharashtra All India quota altogether.
Do not assume every Maharashtra state-affiliated MBA institute treats the All India quota the same way. Seat percentage, fee differential, and which of the six accepted exams each institute weights most heavily in its own internal ranking can vary by institute, so a candidate targeting a specific Maharashtra college should check that institute's own CAP information bulletin rather than assuming JBIMS's structure applies uniformly.
Outside Maharashtra, treat every CMAT-accepting institute as its own separate application. Unlike JoSAA's single-portal system, applying to five CMAT-accepting institutes nationally means five separate applications, five separate document uploads, and five separate shortlist timelines to track.
CMAT itself has no JoSAA-style centrally coordinated spot round; each of the 1,000-plus participating institutes manages its own waitlist independently after its initial offer round. Within Maharashtra's DTE CAP process specifically, DTE does run additional or spot rounds after the main CAP Rounds 1 through 3 to fill any seats left vacant, on a schedule DTE Maharashtra publishes separately each cycle.

6 to 8 verified test-taker reviews required. Curation mix: one recent high scorer (95-plus percentile, admitted to a top CMAT-accepting institute), one average shortlisted candidate at a mid-tier institute, one candidate who used their CMAT score specifically for the Maharashtra DTE CAP All India quota route, one repeat test-taker, one first-attempt test-taker, and one candidate who sat both CAT and CMAT in the same admission cycle for perspective on how the two exams compared in practice. All must be scorecard-verified and year-stamped. Without these the page cannot meet the experiential E-E-A-T moat requirement.
CMAT 2027 registration is expected to open around October to November 2026, following the official Information Bulletin from the National Testing Agency. This is a projection based on the CMAT 2024, 2025, and 2026 cycles' timing; both the bulletin and registration dates are tentative until NTA confirms them.
CMAT 2027 is expected around January 24, 2027, projecting forward from the pattern of the exam being held on a Sunday in the fourth week of January in recent cycles. This date should be treated as tentative until the official Information Bulletin is released.
NTA itself does not prescribe a minimum aggregate percentage to register for and sit CMAT; any candidate with a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university, including final-year students who will complete their degree before admission, is eligible to appear. Most participating institutes, however, require at least 50% aggregate marks for general-category admission and 45% for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and PwD candidates.
CMAT runs once a year, so a candidate gets one sitting per cycle. There is no cap on how many yearly cycles a candidate can reappear in, since neither an age limit nor a lifetime attempt cap applies.
Roughly 95-plus for a realistic shortlist shot at JBIMS's All India quota seats or SIMSREE Mumbai; 85 to 95 percentile for strong tier-two B-schools such as K J Somaiya or Welingkar Mumbai; 70 to 90 percentile for a wide range of established regional and university-linked institutes. These are shortlist benchmarks, not admission guarantees, since each institute's own Group Discussion, Written Ability Test, or Personal Interview process decides the final seat.
CMAT converts each candidate's raw score into a percentile relative to all candidates who appeared that cycle. In cycles where the exam runs across more than one shift, NTA first applies a percentile-equalisation normalisation to account for difficulty differences between shifts before computing final percentiles; the CMAT 2026 cycle ran in a single shift, so no cross-shift normalisation was required that year.
No. CMAT has no single national counselling body. Each of the 1,000-plus participating institutes runs its own shortlist, Group Discussion, Written Ability Test, or Personal Interview process independently, closer in structure to CUET's per-institute admission model than to JoSAA's single national portal. The one significant exception is Maharashtra's DTE CAP process for MBA/MMS admission, where CMAT is one of six accepted exams for the All India quota category.
Not exclusively. Maharashtra's DTE accepts CMAT alongside five other national exams (MAH-CET itself, CAT, XAT, MAT, ATMA, and GMAT) for its All India quota category. A candidate does not need to hold specifically a CMAT score; any one of the six qualifies. What is required regardless of which score a candidate holds is separate registration on the DTE Maharashtra CAP portal to participate in the counselling itself.
No. CMAT results are generated against the final published answer key, and NTA does not offer rechecking or re-evaluation of scores once declared. Only errors in personal information can be raised through the NTA helpdesk.
One admission cycle, the academic session immediately following the result. A CMAT score cannot be carried forward to a later admission year the way some exams allow.
No. Each participating institute sets its own minimum CMAT percentile threshold and its own Group Discussion, Written Ability Test, or Personal Interview weighting independently, so the same CMAT percentile produces very different outcomes at different institutes.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship is CMAT's fifth section, covering entrepreneurship concepts, government schemes such as Startup India and MSME-related initiatives, and startup-related current affairs. It was optional and excluded from the percentile calculation when introduced for CMAT 2021, but has been compulsory and counted toward the overall percentile since CMAT 2022.
More than 1,000 AICTE-approved institutions nationally, including JBIMS Mumbai (for its All India quota seats), SIMSREE Mumbai, K J Somaiya Institute of Management, Welingkar Mumbai, Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai, National Insurance Academy Pune, IRMA Anand, the Institute of Management at Nirma University, BIMTECH Greater Noida, and LBSIM Delhi, among many others. Each institute runs its own separate admission process alongside CMAT.
No. CAT and XAT are generally regarded as the two most difficult MBA entrance exams in India. CMAT sits at a moderate difficulty level, with no sectional time limit and straightforward multiple-choice questions, and MAT is generally considered the most accessible of the four. This is part of why CMAT is often used as a backup or parallel attempt by candidates who also sit CAT.
No, for most candidates. CMAT's Quant, Logical Reasoning, and Language Comprehension content sits at a level most CAT-prepared candidates can handle with comparatively little additional work. What tends to make the real difference is a sustained daily General Awareness reading habit, paired with a standalone CMAT-focused mock series.
Two printed copies of the admit card with a recent passport-size photograph affixed, one valid original government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence) matching the application details, and two additional passport-size photographs matching the one uploaded during registration, for the attendance sheet. Photocopies or digital copies of ID proof are not accepted.
Yes. A single CMAT score is valid for admission consideration at any of the 1,000-plus participating institutes; a candidate applies separately to each institute they want considered for, since CMAT itself does not route applications centrally the way a single-portal counselling system would.
NTA has never published an explicit rationale, but the practical effect is that CMAT tests raw accuracy and section-ordering judgment differently from CAT's rigid sectional lock: a CMAT candidate can strategically front-load stronger sections and return to weaker ones, a tactic CAT's non-transferable 40-minute sectional windows make impossible.
