Overview
Botanists study plant biology — taxonomy, physiology, ecology, genetics, biotechnology, and applied uses (food crops, medicinal plants, conservation). India's biodiversity (45,000+ plant species, including high endemism in the Western Ghats and Eastern Himalayas), the rapidly growing plant-tissue-culture industry, herbal medicine R&D, and crop biotechnology research drive demand. The Botanical Survey of India (BSI), state forest departments, ICAR institutes, pharma R&D (especially for Ayurveda product development at Patanjali, Himalaya, Dabur, Kerala Ayurveda), and academic botany departments provide steady employment.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Conduct field plant surveys and collect specimens for herbarium documentation; identify and classify plants using taxonomic keys; conduct plant tissue culture and micropropagation; develop in-vitro propagation protocols for rare or commercial species; analyse plant phytochemistry for medicinal applications; conduct genetic and molecular studies on crop improvement; teach undergraduate and postgraduate students; publish in peer-reviewed journals; manage grant-funded research projects.
