Overview
Documentary filmmakers produce non-fiction films covering social, political, environmental, biographical, historical, sports, food, and travel subjects. India has a rich documentary tradition — Films Division of India (FDI), Public Service Broadcasting Trust, Doordarshan, plus the new generation of OTT-distributed documentaries (Netflix India docs, Amazon Prime, JioHotstar). The post-COVID streaming boom has expanded documentary commissioning sharply — Netflix India Docs Originals, Prime Video Originals, MX Originals (now Amazon), and independent platforms like Documentary India Foundation. Indian docs win at IDFA, Sundance, Berlinale.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Research and pitch documentary subjects to commissioners; develop treatments and outlines; conduct character research and interview prep; direct interviews and on-camera shoots; manage small-team production (DOP, sound, production manager); edit with editor (long process — often months); negotiate music and archive rights; submit to film festivals and pitch markets; manage distribution (OTT sales, theatrical, educational); coordinate with grant funders (IDFA Bertha Fund, Sundance Grant, DocSociety).
