Overview
BI Analysts build dashboards, reports, and self-service analytics for business users using Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Qlik, or AWS QuickSight. Distinct from data scientists (predictive modelling) and data engineers (pipelines), BI analysts focus on visualisation, business metrics, and turning data into decisions. Indian demand has exploded across IT services (Cognizant, TCS, Infosys BI practice), Big 4 consulting BI teams, GCCs, and in-house analytics teams at banks, manufacturing, and retail. Power BI dominates the Microsoft-heavy enterprise market; Tableau dominates retail and consumer brands.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Gather business reporting requirements from stakeholders; design and build interactive dashboards in Power BI / Tableau; write SQL and DAX queries against data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift); create semantic models and tabular data models; develop and maintain ETL data flows; conduct ad-hoc analysis for business questions; train business users on self-service BI; ensure data quality and governance (definitions, KPIs); document data lineage.

Education path
B.Com, BBA, B.Sc Statistics/Mathematics, B.Tech CSE/IT, or MBA Business Analytics. Entry into BI is one of the most accessible analytics paths — Power BI / Tableau can be self-taught in 3-6 months, and Microsoft / Tableau certifications are widely accepted.
