Overview
Quantitative analysts (quants) develop mathematical and statistical models for trading, risk management, derivatives pricing, and algorithmic strategies. The Indian quant scene is dominated by global capability centres of investment banks (JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Bank of America), proprietary trading firms (Optiver, Tower Research, Jane Street, IMC Trading, da Vinci Derivatives), and the growing domestic quant ecosystem at QuantInsti, AlphaGrep, Quadeye, Dolat Capital. Pay is among the highest in Indian finance, with strong premium for IIT / IIM / ISI graduates.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Develop pricing models for derivatives (options, swaps, structured products); build statistical arbitrage and market-making strategies; backtest trading algorithms on historical data; calibrate models to market data and validate against benchmarks; manage Greeks and risk exposures intra-day; collaborate with traders on strategy refinement; develop risk management models (VaR, expected shortfall); contribute to research on market microstructure.
Skills required
- Stochastic calculus and probability theory
- Numerical methods (Monte Carlo, finite difference)
- Derivatives pricing (Black-Scholes, local volatility, jump-diffusion)
- Time-series analysis and econometrics
- Python (NumPy, pandas, scipy) and C++
- Statistical and machine learning models
- Bloomberg, Refinitiv, internal trading platforms
- Risk metrics (VaR, ES, stress testing)
Education path
B.Tech / B.E. (Math, CS, Engineering) from IIT or top-tier engineering school + M.Sc / MBA / M.S. in Financial Engineering, Quantitative Finance, Statistics, Applied Math, Operations Research. M.Stat / M.Sc Statistics from ISI Kolkata is a top pipeline. CQF (Certificate in Quantitative Finance) is a focused alternative. PhD common for senior quant research roles. CFA + FRM as supporting credentials.
