Overview
Statisticians design experiments, surveys, and models to extract insights from data. Distinct from data scientists (who lean toward predictive modelling and engineering), statisticians focus on rigorous inference, experimental design, sampling, and methodology. India's major employers include the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) at MoSPI, the Reserve Bank of India, NSO, IIPS, government and academic research, pharmaceutical biostatistics (Novartis, Pfizer, GSK India), survey research (Nielsen, IPSOS, Kantar), insurance underwriting (LIC, HDFC Life, SBI Life actuarial-adjacent roles), and the growing analytics function at tech companies.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design experiments and surveys with appropriate sample sizes and randomisation; conduct statistical analysis using SAS, R, Python, Stata; build inference and predictive models with proper uncertainty quantification; review research methodology and validate statistical claims; advise on data quality and study design; publish methodological papers (academic track); provide statistical consulting to non-statisticians in cross-functional teams; participate in regulatory submissions for pharma biostatistics.
Skills required
- Probability theory and statistical inference
- Experimental design (RCT, factorial, response surface)
- Survey sampling theory
- Regression and generalised linear models
- Bayesian methods
- Time-series analysis
- Software: SAS, R, Python, Stata, JMP
- Biostatistics specialisations (for pharma roles)
Education path
B.Sc Statistics (Hons strongly preferred) followed by M.Sc Statistics or M.Stat from ISI Kolkata (the gold standard), Delhi School of Economics, JNU, Pune University, IIT Kanpur Mathematics and Statistics, IIT Bombay Mathematics, Madras University. PhD in Statistics from ISI, IIT, IISc for academic and senior research roles. UPSC Indian Statistical Service (ISS) for government track. SAS Certified Statistical Business Analyst is increasingly valued in industry.
