Goa Medical College (GMC) traces its origin to 1842, when it was founded as the Escola Medico Cirurgica de Goa, a Portuguese-era medical school. It was reorganised and renamed Goa Medical College in 1963. The college is affiliated with Goa University and operates from a 139-acre campus in Bambolim, Tiswadi taluka.
GMC runs the attached Goa Medical College Hospital, the state's main public teaching hospital, with 1,411 beds spread across the main hospital building, a Respiratory Medicine Hospital at St. Inez, a Super-Specialty Block, and a Rural Health Training Centre at Mandur.
