Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV), Raipur is Chhattisgarh's founding state agricultural university, established on 20 January 1987 by bifurcation from Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur. It ranked 28th nationally in NIRF's 2025 Agriculture and Allied Sectors category, a sharp rise from 39th the year before. IGKV runs 29 constituent and 11 affiliated colleges across agriculture, agricultural engineering, and food technology, after its veterinary, dairy, and fisheries colleges moved to a separate university in 2012 and its standalone horticulture colleges moved to another in 2020.
IGKV runs 29 constituent colleges and 11 affiliated private colleges, spanning agriculture, agricultural engineering, and food technology, offering 3 undergraduate, 20 postgraduate, and 19 doctoral programmes. Its research centres include three Centres of Excellence, in medicinal and aromatic plants, protected cultivation and precision farming, and agro-industrial biotechnology, alongside a NABL-accredited pesticide-residue testing laboratory. In its most recently disclosed year to NIRF, IGKV reported 192 sponsored research projects from 44 funding agencies.
IGKV traces to a 1903 agricultural research farm at Raipur that became a Rice Research Station and, in 1974, the Madhya Pradesh Rice Research Institute, before the university itself was established in 1987 by splitting Chhattisgarh's agricultural colleges away from Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur. When Chhattisgarh became a separate state in 2000, IGKV's own account describes only an administrative modification bringing self-financed affiliated colleges under its jurisdiction, not a structural split.
Two later restructurings shaped IGKV's current footprint more significantly. In April 2012, its veterinary, dairy, and fisheries colleges moved to a newly created Dau Shri Vasudev Chandrakar Kamdhenu Vishwavidyalaya at Durg. Around 2020, its standalone horticulture colleges moved to a newly created Mahatma Gandhi University of Horticulture and Forestry, also at Durg. IGKV retains horticulture teaching within its College of Agriculture and continues to award Master's and PhD degrees in the subject; the standalone colleges, not the discipline, left.
