The 114-acre campus at P.O. Botanic Garden, Howrah, has 17 hostels (9 boys multi-seated halls, 5 boys single-seated halls, and 3 girls hostels), a central library with over 140,000 books, departmental labs, a health centre, and sports facilities. The campus is adjacent to the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, one of the largest botanical gardens in the world, creating a distinctive green environment. Howrah Junction railway station is approximately 5 km from campus; Kolkata city centre is approximately 8 km by road.
Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, traces its origin to 1856 as the Civil Engineering College established by the British colonial administration on 24 November, making it one of the oldest continuously operating engineering institutions in Asia. It was reorganised as Bengal Engineering College in 1880, converted to a deemed university in 1992 under the UGC Act, and redesignated the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST Shibpur), declared an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in March 2014. The 114-acre campus is adjacent to the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden at P.O. Botanic Garden, Howrah, West Bengal 711103, approximately 5 km from Howrah Junction railway station.
IIEST Shibpur offers ten B.Tech branches: Civil Engineering (155 seats), Computer Science and Engineering (102), Electrical Engineering (102), Information Technology (102), Mechanical Engineering (102), Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (70), Aerospace Engineering (51), Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (51), Mining Engineering (51), and Mathematics and Computing (40); total approximately 826 seats. A 5-year B.Arch programme with 24 seats is also offered. All B.Tech, B.Arch, and Integrated M.Sc programmes are admitted through JEE Main and JoSAA (institute code 232). M.Tech via GATE and a PhD programme across multiple departments are also offered.
NIRF 2025 ranked IIEST Shibpur 54th in Engineering (score 53.63) and 4th in Architecture and Planning (score 68.37). The Architecture programme held rank 4 in both NIRF 2024 and 2025, placing it among the top five Architecture programmes in India. The 2024-25 placement season saw approximately 509 students placed from the batch, with an estimated average CTC of approximately Rs 9.5 LPA, a median of Rs 8.5 LPA, and highest of Rs 56 LPA (Microsoft India PPO), from 135 companies.
The 5-year B.Arch programme at IIEST Shibpur ranked 4th in NIRF 2025 Architecture and Planning (score 68.37), same as in NIRF 2024 (rank 4, score 69.71), up from rank 10 in 2023. Only IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, and CEPT University rank above it. The B.Arch admits 24 students through JEE Main Paper 2 and JoSAA; approximate JoSAA 2025 OS GN closing rank: 1,576.
Founded in 1856, IIEST Shibpur is one of the oldest engineering institutions in Asia, predating IIT Kharagpur by nearly a century. The heritage campus adjacent to the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in Howrah offers a distinctive academic environment, approximately 5 km from Howrah Junction with direct access to Kolkata.
IIEST is one of very few government institutions admitting B.Tech students in Aerospace Engineering (51 seats) through JEE Main and JoSAA; Mining Engineering (51 seats) and Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (51 seats) serve sectors with specialised hiring. JoSAA 2025 OS GN closing: Aerospace approx 36,842; Mining approx 81,700.
Tuition is Rs 62,500 per semester (Rs 1.25 lakh per year, Rs 5 lakh total over four years), same structure as NITs, with full waiver for SC, ST, and differently-abled students and graduated waivers for families with annual income below Rs 5 lakh.
The campus is 5 km from Howrah Junction and effectively inside the Kolkata metro area, giving students direct access to Kolkata-based companies in technology, manufacturing, finance, and core engineering. Top recruiters include Microsoft, Google, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Texas Instruments, L&T, and Tata Steel.
Honest caveat: IIEST Shibpur's NIRF Engineering rank has declined sharply: 35 in 2023, 49 in 2024, and 54 in 2025, with the score also falling from 56.12 to 53.63, driven mainly by a weak Research and Professional Practice sub-score (RPC: 37.75 in 2025). The placement average of approximately Rs 9.5 LPA and median of Rs 8.5 LPA are below peer institutions with similar or lower NIRF Engineering ranks. The B.Arch intake is only 24 seats. NAAC accreditation cycle year could not be confirmed from the NAAC portal; the CGPA 3.30 likely reflects the 2nd-cycle (circa 2018-19) assessment.
