IIT Kharagpur was established in May 1951 as the first Indian Institute of Technology. The first batch entered the campus at Hijli Detention Camp (a former British colonial prison repurposed as the institute's first home, with the original detention block now a heritage building on campus). Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, gave a famous speech at the institute's inauguration in 1956 declaring it a "fine monument of India representing India's urges, India's future in the making."
The 2,100-acre campus is the largest IIT campus by acreage and operates as a self-contained township. The campus has its own railway station (Kharagpur Junction is 10 minutes away), 25+ residential halls, 15+ shopping outlets, multiple banks, postal services, dispensaries, and recreational facilities. Across its 75 years, IIT Kharagpur has produced more than 75,000 alumni, the largest alumni base of any IIT.
The institute today operates 23 academic departments and 12 schools / centres, offering: B.Tech (16 branches), Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech, 12 branches), Integrated MSc (5 disciplines), B.Arch (one of 4 IITs offering Architecture), 5-year integrated BL / LLM at the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL, the only law school in any IIT), MBA at the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSOM), M.Tech (60+ specialisations), MS-by-Research, M.Sc., M.Des., and PhD across all departments.
Only IIT offering Architecture, Law (RGSOIPL), Mining, and full Engineering portfolio on one campus
2,100 acres; township-style with own railway station, 25+ halls, full civic infrastructure
75,000+ alumni (largest of any IIT); strongest alumni network for industry referral
Founded 1951, the model for the IIT system; deepest historical legacy
NIRF Law 2025 #1, only IIT offering Law; strong IP/tech-law placement
NIRF Management 2025 #11; one of top IIT MBA programmes
IIT-Kgp B.Arch ranked #6 in NIRF Architecture 2025
Among 4 IITs offering Aerospace; only IIT offering Naval Architecture along with IIT Madras
Honest caveat: IIT Kharagpur is in Kharagpur, a small West Bengal town (population ~3 lakh). Off-campus urban amenities are limited; the nearest major city (Kolkata) is 120 km / 2 hours by train. Local language is Bengali; the campus operates in English. The campus is geographically isolated, which historically led to a more inward-looking student culture (some alumni cite this as positive: stronger campus community, fewer city distractions; others as negative: limited external exposure during 4 years).
