Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta) was established on 14 November 1961 as the first IIM in India, in Joka, South Kolkata, West Bengal. It is an Institute of National Importance under the IIM Act 2017, which granted IIMs autonomous degree-awarding status. In NIRF 2025, it ranked 7th in the Management category (score 77.34); it held #3 from 2016 to 2022.
IIM Calcutta was the first Indian B-school to achieve Triple Crown: AACSB (2014), AMBA (2014), and EQUIS (April 2016). It is the only Indian member of the CEMS Alliance (30 global partner schools), enabling select MBA students to also earn the CEMS Master in Management (MIM) degree, ranked 4th globally in QS 2026.

IIMs are exempt from AICTE oversight under the IIM Act 2017 and confer statutory degrees, not PGDM diplomas.
