National Institute of Technology Durgapur, commonly known as NIT Durgapur or NITD, was established in 1960 as the Regional Engineering College (REC) Durgapur under an Act of Parliament, one of eight RECs set up jointly by the central and state governments to expand technical education in post-independence India. It was redesignated a National Institute of Technology in 2003, conferred deemed university status under the NIT Act, and declared an Institute of National Importance in 2007. The campus covers 187 acres on Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, Durgapur, West Bengal 713209, approximately 160 km northwest of Kolkata along the Delhi-Howrah railway corridor.
NIT Durgapur currently offers nine B.Tech branches: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Mathematics and Computing, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, with a total sanctioned B.Tech intake of approximately 936 core seats (969 including supernumerary) filled through the JoSAA NIT Pool. The institute also runs 5-year Dual Degree B.Tech+M.Tech in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, 5-year Integrated M.Sc in Mathematics and Chemistry, M.Tech programmes via GATE, MCA, MBA, and a PhD programme across 14 departments.

The 187-acre campus on Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, Durgapur, West Bengal, is fully residential with separate hostels for boys and girls, a central library, sports facilities, computer centres, and departmental research labs, approximately 160 km from Kolkata via NH-2.
Honest caveat: NIT Durgapur's NIRF Engineering rank declined from 43 (2023) to 44 (2024) to 49 (2025) despite absolute score improvements, reflecting increasing competition in the top-50 Engineering bracket. The Research and Professional Practice sub-score (RPC: 38.14 in 2025) is the weakest dimension, with Perception at 16.97, both lower than older IITs in similar overall ranges. The 2023-24 NIRF-reported average CTC across all programmes was Rs 7.35 LPA, which is pulled down by lower-paid PG and non-B.Tech cohorts; the B.Tech-specific median of Rs 11.24 LPA is more representative for undergraduate aspirants. Durgapur is an industrial city in West Bengal with good rail access to Kolkata but limited direct flight connectivity.
