IIT Guwahati was established in 1994 as the sixth IIT, set up to bring premier technical education to Northeast India. The 700-acre campus, located in Amingaon (across the Brahmaputra from Guwahati city), is the only IIT campus on a river bank. The campus is widely considered among the most scenic in India, with the Brahmaputra river bordering the south, Naodikhal forest reserve to the west, and Brahmaputra islands visible from many academic blocks.
The institute received Institute of National Importance status with the IIT (Amendment) Act in 1994 and Institute of Eminence status in 2018. As Northeast India's flagship engineering institute, it serves both pan-India admission via JoSAA and acts as a regional hub for Northeast academic / cultural integration with mainland India.
The institute today operates 11 academic departments and 7 schools / centres offering B.Tech (13 branches), Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech, 7 branches), Integrated MSc (4 disciplines), M.Tech (40+ specialisations), MBA at the Department of Industrial and Management Studies (DIMS), MS-by-Research, M.Sc., M.Des., and PhD across all departments.
Only IIT in Northeast India; serves as cultural and academic bridge between mainland and Northeast
Only IIT on a river bank; 700 acres of natural beauty; widely considered most scenic IIT campus
Among 4 IITs offering Aerospace Engineering; strong research output in atmospheric and rocket propulsion
New Centre for Quantum Technology (2025); among top 3 IITs in quantum research
CSE closing AIR 447 (vs IIT-B 67, IIT-D 99, IIT-M 152), easier path for AIR 300-600 General candidates
Highest representation of Northeast Indian students among IITs; rich cultural exchange ecosystem
Honest caveat: IIT Guwahati is in Amingaon, approximately 25 km from Guwahati city centre. Recruiter density is below top-3 IITs due to remote location. Off-campus social life is limited compared to urban IITs (IIT-B, IIT-D); weekend trips to Guwahati city centre (40 min by bus / car) are common. Northeast cultural distance from mainland India can affect students from non-Northeast backgrounds initially. Local language is Assamese; campus operates in English. Rainfall is heavy June-September (monsoon); transport to campus can be disrupted.
