As an NIT, NIT Silchar provides a full tuition fee waiver for SC, ST, and differently-abled students. Students from families with annual income below Rs 1 lakh per year receive a full waiver; income between Rs 1 and Rs 5 lakh receives a two-thirds remission on tuition. General and OBC-NCL students above the Rs 5 lakh income threshold pay full tuition of Rs 1.25 lakh per year. Students may apply for central government Post Matric and merit-cum-means scholarship schemes through the National Scholarship Portal, and for Assam state scholarship schemes through the relevant state portal.
The 540-acre campus at Fakiratilla, Silchar, has eight boys hostels and three girls hostels, with single, double, and triple sharing rooms allocated by seniority and CGPA priority. Each hostel has its own Mess Management Committee, with LAN and Wi-Fi connectivity throughout. Campus facilities include departmental labs, a central library, sports grounds, courts, a health centre, 19 natural lakes, and an active Training and Placement Cell. Silchar Junction railway station is approximately 10 km from campus; Kumbhirgram Airport is approximately 20 km away.
National Institute of Technology Silchar, commonly known as NITS, was established in 1967 as the Regional Engineering College (REC) Silchar, one of several RECs set up jointly by the central and state governments under the Government of India initiative for technical education in the northeastern region. It was redesignated the National Institute of Technology Silchar on 28 June 2002 and declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act in 2007. The 540-acre campus at Fakiratilla, Silchar, Assam, is known for its green landscape with 19 lakes and tea gardens, located approximately 10 km from Silchar Junction railway station and about 20 km from Kumbhirgram Airport.
NIT Silchar offers six B.Tech branches: Computer Science and Engineering (161 seats), Electrical Engineering (162), Electronics and Communication Engineering (162), Mechanical Engineering (161), Civil Engineering (157), and Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (81); total approximately 884 seats (JoSAA 2025). All B.Tech seats are filled through JEE Main and JoSAA (institute code 224). M.Tech via GATE, MCA, MBA, and a PhD programme across multiple departments are also offered.
NIRF 2025 ranked NIT Silchar 50th in Engineering (score 55.91), after rank 40 in both NIRF 2024 (score 57.60) and NIRF 2023 (score 55.07). The NIRF 2025 Overall ranking places the institute at rank 97 (score 49.51). The 2024-25 placement season saw approximately 602 students placed out of 832 in the graduating batch, with an average CTC of Rs 13.34 LPA, median of Rs 10 LPA, and highest of Rs 52.89 LPA from over 200 companies. CSE averaged Rs 19.14 LPA in 2024-25.
NIRF 2025 Engineering rank 50 (score 55.91). CSE branch averaged Rs 19.14 LPA in 2024-25, with top recruiters including Amazon, Microsoft, Adobe, Google, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, and Arcesium India (Rs 36 LPA, 4 students). Highest offer Rs 52.89 LPA in 2024-25.
The Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering branch (81 seats) is offered in relatively few NITs, targeting instrumentation, control systems, and industrial electronics sectors. JoSAA 2025 OS closing rank approx 20,331 (Open GN).
The fully residential 540-acre campus at Fakiratilla has 19 natural lakes, tea garden surroundings, eight boys hostels, and three girls hostels. The scenic environment and large campus area are distinctive among NITs in the northeast.
Tuition is Rs 62,500 per semester (Rs 1.25 lakh per year, Rs 5 lakh total for 4 years). Full waiver for SC, ST, and PwD students; two-thirds waiver for family income Rs 1 to 5 lakh; full waiver for income below Rs 1 lakh.
JoSAA 2025 OS quota final-round closing ranks (Open GN): CSE approx 12,665; ECE approx 17,484; EIE approx 20,331; EE approx 23,036; ME approx 30,336; Civil approx 43,449.
Honest caveat: NIT Silchar's NIRF Engineering rank dropped from 40 (2024) to 50 (2025), and the Overall rank declined three years running: 83 (2023) to 92 (2024) to 97 (2025), driven partly by low Perception scores. The 2024-25 placement rate was approximately 72% of all graduates (602 of 832); CSE placed 63.1%, EE 47%, Civil 43%, and ME 41%, well below the often-cited 91% which counts only registered students. Silchar location is remote -- Silchar Junction has 8 to 12-hour trains to Guwahati -- restricting recruiter access. NAAC accreditation cycle year could not be confirmed (the 2014 accreditation may have lapsed).
