Presidency University traces to Hindu College, founded in Kolkata in 1817, renamed Presidency College in 1855, and functioning for most of its history as a constituent college of the University of Calcutta before becoming an independent state university in 2010. Its historic College Street campus remains its primary identity, alongside a newer New Town campus that opened in 2019.
Presidency University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across its Natural and Mathematical Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences faculties, plus specialised programmes in Astrophysics, Biotechnology, Earth Sciences, Public Policy, and Data Informatics.
Undergraduate admission runs through PUBDET, the university's own entrance test conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board, with Class 12 marks used as a qualifying rather than primary ranking criterion. Postgraduate admission runs through a separate open-quota process for its two-year master's programmes.
