Visva-Bharati University was founded in 1921 by Rabindranath Tagore at Santiniketan, Birbhum district, West Bengal, as an experimental institution rooted in his educational philosophy, including a distinctive open-air, "under the trees" teaching tradition. It became a Central University by Act of Parliament in 1951. Santiniketan itself was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.
Visva-Bharati offers more than 150 undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and diploma programmes across its 12 constituent institutes, spanning Humanities, Science, Performing Arts, Agriculture, Education, and Languages.
Undergraduate and postgraduate admission runs via CUET, followed by counselling and document verification. PhD admission uses the university's own entrance test plus an interview, with UGC-NET or CSIR-NET scores considered in the selection process.
