University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) was established in 1917 by Sir M. Visvesvaraya, then Diwan of Mysore, as the College of Engineering, Bangalore. It opened on 1 July 1917 with 45 students and was the first engineering college in Karnataka and the fifth in India. Its Department of Electrical Engineering was the first to be established anywhere in the country.

Under the University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering Act 2021, passed by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in February 2022, UVCE was converted into an independent, autonomous state university, with separation from Bangalore University completed by March 2023.
