Overview
DevOps engineers build the infrastructure and tooling that lets product teams ship code reliably. They own CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, observability, on-call rotations, and incident response. Every Indian tech company that runs production systems needs them; demand is consistent and salaries have risen 30 to 40 percent since 2020.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI); manage Kubernetes clusters and helm charts; provision infrastructure with Terraform, Pulumi, or CloudFormation; respond to production incidents and write postmortems; tune observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog); manage cloud spend across AWS / Azure / GCP; harden security posture; on-call rotation participation.
Skills required
- Linux command line and shell scripting
- Docker and Kubernetes
- Terraform or Pulumi
- AWS / Azure / GCP (one in depth)
- Git and GitHub Actions or Jenkins
- Observability (Prometheus, Grafana)
- Networking fundamentals (DNS, load balancers, VPCs)
- Incident response and SRE practices
Education path
B.Tech CSE / IT or BCA + MCA. Many DevOps engineers transition from software engineering or systems administration backgrounds. Cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, CKA) carry significant weight; the formal degree matters less than demonstrated infrastructure ability.
