Overview
DevSecOps Engineers integrate security into the software development and deployment pipeline — automating security checks into CI/CD, managing cloud security, hardening containers, and ensuring compliance (SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS, GDPR). The role evolved from DevOps with security shifting 'left' (earlier in the SDLC). Indian tech companies and GCCs have built large DevSecOps teams as regulatory pressure (DPDP Act 2023, GDPR for export-facing businesses) and cyber incidents have grown. Pay rivals senior DevOps and security-architect roles.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with integrated security (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI); implement SAST (Static Application Security Testing) tools (SonarQube, Checkmarx, Snyk); implement DAST (Dynamic Application Security Testing) tools (OWASP ZAP, Burp Suite Enterprise); manage container security (Trivy, Aqua, Twistlock); manage Kubernetes security (Falco, OPA/Gatekeeper); implement IaC security scanning (Checkov, tfsec); manage secrets (Vault, AWS Secrets Manager); respond to security incidents; manage compliance (SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS) automation.
