Overview
Drone pilots (Remote Pilots) operate commercial unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across agriculture (crop spraying, mapping), construction (site surveying, progress monitoring), real estate (aerial photography), media (filmmaking, journalism), inspections (power lines, pipelines, wind turbines), defence (surveillance), and emerging delivery applications. India's Drone Rules 2021 + Drone PLI Scheme have catalysed the industry — DGCA-registered Remote Pilot Licences (RPL) are now mandatory for most commercial operations. The Indian commercial drone market is projected to grow from ~$1 billion (2025) to ~$5 billion (2030). Major operators include Garuda Aerospace, ideaForge, Tata Advanced Systems, Asteria Aerospace.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Plan drone missions per client requirements (mapping, inspection, aerial photography); conduct pre-flight checks (battery, GPS, sensors); operate drone within DGCA airspace regulations and Drone Rules 2021; capture imagery / data per mission objectives; process and analyse aerial data using GIS tools (DroneDeploy, Pix4D, DJI Terra); coordinate with ground crew on safety and emergency procedures; maintain flight logs per DGCA requirements; troubleshoot drone hardware/software issues; stay current with evolving drone regulations.
Skills required
- Drone operation across platforms (DJI Mavic, Matrice, Phantom; ideaForge SWITCH, Garuda; custom builds)
- DGCA Drone Rules 2021 and BVLOS regulations
- Aerial photography and videography composition
- Photogrammetry and orthomosaic generation (Pix4D, DroneDeploy)
- GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS) for processing drone data
- Pre-flight planning and risk assessment
- Battery, propeller, and gimbal maintenance
- Aerial cinematography for media work
Education path
10+2 minimum; some operators require Bachelor's degree depending on application. DGCA Remote Pilot Licence (RPL) is mandatory for commercial flying — obtained from a DGCA-approved Remote Pilot Training Organisation (RPTO). Training duration: 5-7 days of theory + practical. Top RPTOs: Garuda Aerospace Drone Academy Chennai, BotLab Dynamics IIT Madras Research Park, Indrones Solutions Mumbai, ALPHALL TECH Hyderabad, Tata Advanced Systems Pilot Training. International drone pilot certification (FAA Part 107, EASA) for global work.
