Overview
NLP (Natural Language Processing) Engineers build systems that understand and generate human language — chatbots, virtual assistants, translation, sentiment analysis, named-entity recognition, document classification, search. Indian NLP demand spans Indic-language-specific work (Sarvam AI building Hindi/Tamil/Telugu LLMs, Krutrim's Indian foundation models, AI4Bharat at IIT Madras), customer support automation (Yellow.ai, Haptik, Kommunicate), and enterprise document AI (Microsoft, Google, AWS Indian offices). The role overlaps with Generative AI / Prompt Engineer but is more technically deep in language-model internals.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Design and train NLP models for specific tasks (NER, sentiment, classification, summarisation, translation); fine-tune pre-trained language models (BERT, RoBERTa, T5, Llama, Mistral); build Indic-language datasets and tokenisers; develop conversational AI systems (intent classification, dialog management); evaluate model performance using BLEU, ROUGE, METEOR, perplexity; integrate NLP models into production applications; manage model versioning and A/B testing; stay current with ACL, EMNLP, NAACL research; address ethical / bias concerns in NLP outputs.
Skills required
- Deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX)
- NLP libraries (Hugging Face Transformers, spaCy, NLTK)
- Language model architectures (transformers, encoder-decoder)
- Tokenisation and embedding techniques (BPE, SentencePiece)
- Fine-tuning techniques (LoRA, QLoRA, PEFT)
- Knowledge of Indian-language processing challenges
- Evaluation metrics (BLEU, ROUGE, perplexity)
- Python and basic C++ for optimisation
Education path
B.Tech CSE / Electronics or B.Sc CS with strong math background. M.Tech / M.S. in AI / NLP / Computational Linguistics for research-heavy roles. PhD at IISc, IIT Bombay (CSE), IIT Madras (CSE / AI4Bharat), IIT Delhi (CSE), CMU, Stanford, MIT for foundation-model research. Self-taught entry through Kaggle competitions, Hugging Face Hub contributions, and AI4Bharat / EkStep / Bhashini collaborations.
